A typical Coen brothers film. Quirky, fast-moving, complex, character-driven, rife with dark humor and original. For those of us that love the Coen's movies and the actor troupe that often accompanies them you will enjoy and sometimes relish this movie. It's a lot of fun to see these actors play against type (and they all do so to varying degrees) - especially Pitt and Clooney. My only complaint is that when I left the theater and reflected a bit I had the feeling that the movie was trying too hard to be complex and different - like it was self-aware in its efforts to try and shock us. Probably me just over-thinking this good...maybe great movie!
del Toro does it again - only better than the first time! You just cannot make a better comic book movie....except maybe The Dark Knight. Actually - I think they have equal status in terms of quality entertainment. They are different in that the characters, comics & mythologies are different. Perfect casting...same for the makeup, creature effects, dialogue, scripting, editing, music, pacing, story....everything! The only weakness in this movie is in it's niche movie prospective audience. If Hellboy had the historical worldwide recognition that Batman has this movie would gross a billion-plus easy. Let's hope it does well enough to inspire a third to complete the trilogy! Viva del Toro!
Hard to pick apart this quality old west movie. Note that many reviewers have nothing but good things to say about the movie but still hold back the 5th star. Not sure why? Ed Harris cements his multi-dimensional worth with this film! His directing, writing and acting are all top notch. Mortensen was born to play this type of character role. He is perfectly cast and does not let us down. This is a story and character driven movie and it will grab and hold onto you from beginning to end. Well done Ed Harris!
Kudos to Nolan and his wonderful actors and staff. All of the positive superlatives you have no doubt already heard apply here. It is very difficult to see any movie with such high expectations and leave the theater in awe knowing that the film exceeded those expectations! This review is being written almost 5 months from when I first saw it opening day in IMAX and I have since seen The Dark Knight 4 more times - each time at a theater with unique configurations. Each viewing just got better! This is the standard now - not only for superhero movies - but for any movie that overlaps the genre. Evolutionary!
Fascinating movie that represents a time of profound change at a period in our history. We were entertained and felt educated as well. The 2+ hours whizzed right by and we enjoyed soaking up the story portrayed on the screen. One of Dennis Quaid's best performances in his distinguished career. The cast, editing, sound, cinematography, action sequences....all were top-notch. Just really cannot find anything to pick a nit about. A family movie to take your10+ year-olds to and let them be inspired. TheMovieRhino gives this film five horns! See it!
This is the epitome of a Guy Ritchie English gangster pic. If you liked his earlier films of this genre you will like RocknRolla. Butler and Wilkinson are as good as you would expect them to be. Always a quality performance from these two. This movie really moves along....full of British banter, multi-dimensional activity, double-crossing and intrigue....all of which is interesting and holds your attention. Perhaps too much & too confusing at times but it can be forgiven as it is part of the chaotic "stew" intentionally created in the Ritchie "crime-world". RocknRolla is a fun ride.
Where have all the good horror movies gone? I miss 'em. There was a golden age of horror flicks (1930 - 1960). Eventually we got into the silver age of horror flicks (1970 - 1995). Those of us that like to be captivated, intrigued and scared just a bit are waiting for the next age of horror cinema and it has not yet arrived. Proof is in the pudding. There is an amazing amount of "schlock" out there and of this ilk House is just one of many. There is simply nothing here for a discriminating horror movie fan. Stay in your house and watch Dr. House on TV before going to see House! You will enjoy yourself more and save some of your hard-earned moolah. Nuff said.
This movie is different. It is shot differently than many action movies and the manner in which it moves back and forth from the Middle East to Crowe's character's home life is interesting. I, for one, expect the sort of quality product that Crowe and director Scott provide for us in this movie. I typically have low expectations when it comes to DiCaprio but lately and in this movie as well he is showing some mature, rangy acting chops. The only negatives are the movie's length and an unfulfilling and ambiguous ending.
While this movie was trying to be a "I see dead people" type of a flick it really was a "I saw a dead movie" type of a flick. Too bad as I generally really admire and relish the talents of Anne Hathaway and David Morse. They just do not have the right script, dialogue and editing to make this plot and movie work. This is a 90 minute movie that felt like 3 hours and I'm sure that most viewers, like me, will guess the plot twist half way through....making the last half very painful to sit through. Be sure if you are a "passenger" in this movie that you "wear a parachute" because you may need to "bail".
Not a big fan of the Saw franchise. The first Saw movie was the best & I would have 3 1/2 -starred it. I'm not sure what keeps the series ticking? Only thing I can think of is the time of year (Halloween) and guys taking their girlfriends so they can "rescue them" during the tense, bloody scenes. They can "pre-plan" their date as they know what the reactions will be. If you tend towards the sadistic, like to simply see blood being splattered and don't feel the need for originality - then see Saw V. For the 99.99% of the population that does not fit into that category best to stay home and watch X-Files reruns.
