The first 2 Punisher movies were far too watered down to resemble what comic book aficionados knew The Punisher to be. He was always meant to be a violent, take-no-prisoners assassin avenging and protecting the innocent. This move and Stevenson capture the character accurately. Not for the under 17's. Not a date movie. My two primary negative criticisms are: Several moments of obvious gratuitous graphic violence and released at Christmas time? Anytime but Christmas would have been a better release date. If you liked The Punisher in comic books you will appreciate Stevenson's portrayal. See it.
Had low expectations for this movie. As much as I like Vince Vaughn there is a point in many recent Vince Vaughn movies that I want him to just be silent. It's like I've had too much V V. It happens in this flick as well for perhaps the final 15 minutes. That said the beginning and overall movie - including all of the odd-ball relatives and in-laws was funny. I laughed out loud quite a few times once the Christmas visitations began. See it and prepare to laugh. Perhaps you have not been as "over-Vaughnicated" as I have and can appreciate that last 15 minutes.
Just not my cup of tea. I can appreciate what the point of the movie was - "what if a super hero was self-destructive and depressed and had all of the related problems that can come with that state of being". Overall the move was just to one-dimesional and predictable for me. Smith's acting is always top notch. The flick just barely slips under what it needs to have for me to recommend it. Not enough there to get my attention and hold it. Some will enjoy it enough but for many, like me, it will be like eating cotton candy without any flavor in it. Skip it.
The main character in this move is perfectly cast and played by Gervais. He has a certain perfuntary and low key style of humor and delivery which matches the movie's tone. I found the movie to be original, full of humor and wit and enjoyed thinking about where all of it was going. In the end it was a satisfying conclusion with a few lessons learned. An adult movie that 90% of adults will enjoy (there are still a few "fuddie-duddies" out there....).
A masterful movie. Greg Kinnear's best work to date. Not sure how much of the movie was the "true story" and how much was movie story-telling license but, regardless, it held everyone in the theater in rapt attention. The story did more than that as it let you in on the other side of persistent heroes and the price they pay for their perseverence and dilligence, This is one of those rare movies, based on a true story, that let you in on all sides of "a fight for your dream" tale. Well worth seeing and taking away all of the many lessons.
If you have been yearning to see Vin Diesel back in a serious action role then you should see this move. You will probably come away, as I did, with an appreciation for Diesel and a negative nod to the overall movie. The plot, editing and flow of the movie was weak at best. Hope that Diesel stays with some serious roles for a while and finds a few with some meat on them and a decent director.
The summer of 2008 has seen something evolutionary when it comes to movies that originated as comic books. With HellBoy II, The Dark Knight and IronMan the quality and mainstream acceptance for comic book super hero movies has become solidified. Director Favreau and a perfect cast play this comic book operatic saga to perfection. Robert Downey Jr. was obviously born to play Tony Stark. This is the comic book movie that old-time comic book efficiandos (Like me) have been waiting for. Don't miss it! See it more than once.
I'm a Christian and I enjoyed this documentary exploration by athiest Maher as he tries to make fun of and build a case for "not believing" in God....or at least not being doctrinally religious. He has an agenda obviously and in some ways, at some times, the "conclusions" he is insinuating throughout I think a lot of Christians would agree with. Truth is there are both stupid, ignorant, pig-headed athiests and religious people. I am a bit sad for Bill and others that believe we are the ultimate microbial mutations and that is all there is. For those that refuse to see the evidence of a Creator their "we-only-live-now religion" eventual dust-full end & short time on Earth is a lonely & sad path to follow.
Saw this movie with fairly low expectations and I know that tends to color my overall opinion if I come away feeling entertained and rewarded for the investment of time and movie budget hard-earned money. That said I can tell you that I was really impressed with Keira Knightley's performance. She exposed an actor's dimensional depth that I did not believe she possessed. Bravo! Add to that the work Ralph Fiennes did with his character and I believe you have two of the finer performances we've seen this year. Here's hoping that Fiennes gets an an Oscar nod for his exceptional nuanced work in this excellent movie!
This is a very funny, very good movie for the genre. Assuming (always a dangerous word - I know) that you have a basic idea of the premise and the acting role stylings of Scott and Rudd....and that is your primary motivation for seeing this flick....I have high confidence you will enjoy yourself. There is some basic redundant (a bit stale) boy-teen humor sewn into some creative and original story line fabric that infuses the movie with a bit of extra "flair". As an added plus I always enjoy Jane Lynch and in this movie I really liked what she brought to her character. Lynch may actually have made this movie for me. Go see it with the right motivation - laugh and enjoy.
