My Week with Marilyn Will Transport You ...

...to a simpler time in the mid 1050's when Marilyn Monroe was the talk of Hollywood ... and thus, the world. For all of her sexual allure she suffered to an almost paralyzing degree from insecurity and mistrust. Michelle Williams captures Marilyn Monroe so completely that any lack of physical appearance is quickly forgotten. One of the best biographical, historical performances ever! My reaction to Kenneth Branagh portraying Sir Lawrence Olivier was tepid, at best, until the movie rolled along ... and in short time I forgot it was Branagh and could feel Olivier on the screen. Amazing performance as well! The entire cast was superb. Dame Judith Dench's performance was perfect and while not on screen that often was, no doubt, an essential part of this repertory. Kudos to director Curtis and his entire cast & crew. The cinematography, costuming, script and musical score all were as perfect as could be. Cannot find any "weak spots" in this gorgeous movie! This film will add another layer to the legend of Marilyn Monroe! I can almost seeing her giving us all that famous smile and wink. A rhino horn way up!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Thank you Martin Scorsese for your experience, your growth in movie-making, your willingness to stretch and your care and craftsmanship with detail and all-things visual. Thank you for respecting the story, educating and entertaining us at the same time and for restraint - not overplaying your hand when given such a strong story about love and healing. You, indeed, are a master film-maker at the top of your game. Hugo is living proof. What a wondrous adventure and love story you let unfold with Hugo! Beautiful, exciting, exquisite, richly inhabited, sprawling and intimate, mysterious and connecting ... Hugo ranks at the top of all movies thus far in 2011 to achieve so much and deserve the accolades it is sure to receive. This visual feast in breathtaking 3D is what movies are all about. Well worth seeing at a quality theater in 3D. Hugo reminds us all that the clock is ticking for each of us and we should be aware of what is important ... Love, forgiveness, dreams, friendships, family, curiosity, mystery, faith, determination, persistence ..... we can repair our "machinery" by remembering and caring for it! A mechanically engineered rhino horn way up! Martin Scorsese - Oscar should have you high on their list for this masterpiece.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Like Crazy is a Thought Provoking ...

...exploration of the evolution of young love when it is stretched and kneaded by the circumstances of distance and time. Writer-director Doremus is not trying to get us to like our young protagonists. He is simply trying to demonstrate possible outcomes of young love after it passes through the tumbling dryer cycle of life. Well acted and well told. This story should make us all feel just a bit uncomfortable as it makes us self-reflect on our most intimate relationships and the things we really like about them ... and how those things might evolve. No happy or unhappy ending here .... just an unknowable, exciting and potentially excruciating future! A "charging into the future at full steam" rhino horn up.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

In Time is a Complex Sci-fi Action Flik....

...that drags us all into a future world with competing moral dilemmas. It is a more thoughtful movie than, at first, one might think. Here are some questions it may tender for you: When is government too big? When do corporations have too much power? What are we all doing about protecting our natural resources? How will resources be divvied up in the future? Can living forever be too long? Why should some people live shorter lives if the determining factor is available resources? Who decides? Okay - enough big philosophical and moral questions! Bottom line - the movie is pretty well done. Timberlake keeps getting better. There is plenty of action. There is some romance. There are dilemmas, suspense and mystery. I like it enough to recommend it. Many will not like it and there are those that will be bored by it and those that "just do not get it". I say: "it is worth THE TIME" to see it. A 1000 year old rhino horn up!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

J. Edgar is an Arresting Portrait ....

...of America's long-serving head of the FBI! It is large in its scope and yet details out many interesting truth-based tidbits about this undeniably interesting man. We enjoyed every nuanced moment of J Edgar and we all looked forward to seeing how much of the movie could be supported by known facts. Kudos to Eastwood for not being tempted to "over-Hollywoodize" this one and make Hoover and his brethren R-rated cartoons and dart boards for the left. A huge round of applause to DiCaprio for his stunning portrayal. Amazing work ...and he could easily get an Oscar nod for his efforts! This is not a film for children or those with a limited attention span. People that like historical bio epics and that can appreciate subtlety will most likely enjoy J Edgar. A rhino horn up!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

... by spending too much time on the serious side and trying to be a "drama" with some laughs sprinkled in it ends up failing on all fronts. There are laughs ... just not enough. There is drama .... but no intrigue. There area couple of twists .... just too forced and not believable. With the acting crew this movie had they should have focused on more laughs and funny business. Director Ratner became sidetracked by his desire to make a more diverse movie. Cannot recommend spending a ton of bucks to see this one in a theater (unless it is a dollar movie house in a couple more weeks). May be worth a rental in a month or two. A rhino horn down.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Puss & Boots 3D ...Better than Shrek ...

... and it is gorgeous in 3D! Seems like every time a 3D animated movie with "hairy critters" in it's mainstay comes out the 3D animators improve on their visual rendering of textures - especially hair, feathers and skin! Puss & Boots 3D take everything visual to the next level and it is visually stunning! The story, dialogue and humor is also A-one! The dialogue and innuendo will, sometimes, go over the heads of the 10 and under crowd ... and I am not sure that the various "intimate romantic references" were really necessary .... but there is plenty of non-stop action, sword play, chases, horse-drawn wagon out-of-control scenes and just plain goofiness to let everyone have a "puurrrfectly" great time! A milk-colored rhino horn up!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Jack and Jill Come Tumbling Down ...

...in this failed attempt to make us laugh while unsuccessfully attempting to foster empathy for socially inept and obtuse sister Jill. Adam Sandler does step a wee bit out of his "usual offerings" in that he is playing 2 roles in Jack and Jill .... that of Jack and his weird sister Jill....and he refrains from much of the sexual humor and bad language that often accompany Sandler "comedies". Sandler would have been better off to stay in his usual mode of R rated humor ... as his attempt to get the audience to empathize with grating twin Jill just does not work. He does make a believable girl (surprisingly) and for that he gets 2 stars .... just not enough here to recommend for a general audience. A double rhino horn down.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Immortals 3D - Visually Stunning Fantasy Epic....

.....worth seeing for the imagery alone. Story and dialogue would rate 2 stars or less BUT the gorgeous visuals, especially in 3D, push this one into the SEE IT category of movies for 2011. Singh (who also directed The Cell and The Fall) has a unique talent for visual expression in form, color and style that is only enhanced by his use of 3D. If he ever finds a way to incorporate a story, script and dialogue to match his cinematographic expertise - watch out! Beautiful and stunning - especially when he resorts to slow motion - Immortals 3D is violent, yet breathtakingly gorgeous, and worth your movie dollar investment at a quality 3D theater. A slow motion floating rhino horn up!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Twilight - Breaking Dawn is Best in the Series ...

... and will give a wide variety of movie goers something to "sink their teeth into". The actors and the technicians seem to be reaching a higher comfort level with what they are doing on-screen and this makes everything flow and helps the audience (especially those, like me, that have never read the books) get more into the pathos and angst of this vampire-werewolf-human love story. The best part of this one happens in the middle and towards the end when we see the tension mount due to a hyper-activated pregnancy, the battle to save mother and "what everyone hopes will be a ..." baby and the werewolf pack's snarling aggression - internally and externally. Throw on your black clothes, grab some sun glasses and sun block and head down to your local emporium of cinema to see Bella deliver a ... (no spoiler here). A rhino horn up.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
