45 minutes too long. Becomes a "snore-fest" once you have acclimated to the cool looking primary color scheme and sleek visual appearance. Just cannot recommend a movie that is this colorful and monotonous at the same time. It wore me out and put me to sleep several times. Seemed like it would never end and near the actual end I felt like I'd been "punished". Give the Wachowski's a gold star for experimenting and coming up with some interesting visual looks and color schemes but an "F" for over-using them and bludgeoning us with them for 135 excruciating minutes.
This is a bad movie from every angle. Shyamalan has lost his touch and this is proof...or at least reinforces our negative suspicions. From there we add on bad acting (Wahlberg is a piece of cardboard in this movie), bad script, bad pacing and, really, a bad story (could have been a better story). MNS needs to find a way to make movies farther away from PA - no matter how bad he wants to work near his house. It (or something) is "killing" his creativity and timing. He has gone from "seeing dead people" to his audience "seeing dead movies". Not a good thing.
This movie was much better than I anticipated. For the genre and despite the PG rating it turned out to work as a kid's movie and an adult movie as well. There are lessons to be learned throughout the movie and they are well told with visuals and deeds. A very enjoyable tale of a well-intentioned boy and his pet dog....er....I mean ....pet water horse. Fun for everyone.
This is a hate it or love it movie. Very few middle roaders here. I fall into the "I loved it" category. I was very skeptical for the first 15 minutes until the action really starting happening. The idea of shooting the entire movie in real time as if one of your party just happens to have a camera is different and holds it's own peculiar challenges. I was entranced and totally into the movie. I felt more a part of the story than any movie in my memory. I'm sure this has been tried before but probably not this well done. Kudos to the director.
What a nice surprise this movie was. Not expecting much but then Francis McDormand worked her special magic and superior acting skills into the title role and thus a very special movie was born. The main character's transformation throughout the movie was a joy to witness and the movie is so well-paced and edited. Very tight and full of life. Gosh we had a great time rooting for Miss Pettigrew! Perchance we get a Pettigrew Part II. I hope that many will eventually see this movie and I suspect that will be done via rental. Please rent it or buy it - you will not be sorry.
Please refer to my earlier review of the IMAX version as well. Loved it and then saw it in a regular multiplex large theater and then in a special classic Cinerama style theater. Altogether saw it 5 times and in a different style of theater each time (I rarely see any movie more than once). Not much more can be said about this movie masterpiece which just happens to be a comic book movie. Heath Ledger is mesmerizing as The Joker and one has to wonder how much he was able to separate himself from the role as he appears to be so fully submerged. Holds you captive from start to finish. An evolutionary movie for this genre and movies in general.
Deserves to be in everyone's classic movie library. Great special effects that still hold up some 30 years later. One of the movies that set the table for Spielberg's hall of fame career as a master director. Richard Dreyfuss at his best. A true masterpiece of imagination and story-telling.
Another one of those movies that people will either really hate or really love. I fall on the "love side" (my wife who saw it wih me - not so much). Kudos to the director's guts for telling and re-showing scenes in mirrored sequences so that you end up with a new perspective and new information incrementally. I had never seen a movie do so much of this basically over the entire length of the film. It worked for me and I enjoyed it but I am very sure that others will not (judging from some of the verbal banter as we left the theater). I say see it - take the risk - and open your mind to this unique vision and method. Enjoyed the acting as well.
Haven't seen Keanu Reeves emote this much ....maybe ever. He is really good in this movie. So are Whitaker, Evans & Laurie. Great story about bad cops and doing the right thing. Lots of nuance. Very well-paced and good tight script. I have a feeling that not too many people are going to see this move and that is a shame. If you can rent it please do so. This flick may get into my top 15 for the year. See it.
So many soft or negative reviews for this movie actually had me thinking about skipping seeing it. Glad I didn't. Enjoyed the whole flick from beginning to end. I like the period style that was created. I enjoyed the story and even liked the overly-pronounced dialogue by Clooney as I felt this was part of the ego and personality of his character. I simply enjoyed the movie and the humor of Clooney, Zellweger and Krasinski. I think you will enjoy this flick mildly or a whole lot. See it.
