Different and a feast for the senses. I only saw it in 3D & IMAX and do not think I would have enjoyed it nearly as much in a regular movie theater. My only complaint is the length and editing. It could have been shortened by 10 minutes and tightened up a bit. Amazing 3D effects and animation! There were times I felt as if I were part of the scene. This movie is the next step in large screen 3D after Polar Express took big screen 3D to another level. It will be interesting to see what this leads to next with Cameron's Avatar in December 2009. See it in IMAX 3D for the visual experience alone.
This is a funny family comedy that simply is what it is. Actually it was better than I anticipated which is why I put off seeing it for so long. Academy Awards weekend and there are "slim pickins" when it comes to new releases so I relented and took the plunge. Hey - I laughed out loud pretty good a few times and the rest of the movie is harmless. If you are going to this movie expecting something different - Why? Why would you go in the first place for Pete's sake? An enjoyable and funny 87 minute diversion. Take the kiddos, grab Gramps & Gramma, stop for pizza and then see this flick. It will be a nice evening for everyone!
Not scary enough to be a horror movie. Not enough dark humor to be campy. Not enough intelligent plotting, editing or natural dialogue to be a good movie. Just not enough of anything one needs to have to make a movie suspenseful, interesting, spine-tingling, intriguing, funny, satisfying or educational. Of course we "kinda" knew what genre this flick was trying to be "good in". It just falls flat in every area. Motel Hell was a masterpiece of the genre compared to this waste of time & money. WANTED - my time & money back. Save yours - don't see it. If we are lucky I will be the only one that does.
Here is one of those "hidden movie gems" that hardly anyone has heard of and few will likely see. That is a real shame. Kudos to the creative team that took on this project and produced such a quality and original mythological tale. John Hurt, Ron Perlman, Sophie Myles and Jim Caviezel were all in excellent form. We will see a lot more from Ms. Myles in the future (remember what the TheMovieRhino is predicting friends)! Perhaps, as I did, you will see the start of King Arthur's legend and dragon mythos in this quick-moving Sci-Fi + Iron age movie. Treat yourself and see this flick - even if you have to work to find where it is showing! You will thank me later.
Good actors, including Clive Owen, are caught up in this action flick which has some high quality action sequences sandwiched in between some convoluted, confusing and boring dialogue & plot lines. The movie gets my recommendation for a theater viewing simply on the strength of the action sequence that takes place in the Guggenheim museum. There are a couple of other top-notch chase scenes that are also worthy. These well-done action pieces draw an even greater contrast with the rest of the movie which leaves much to be desired in terms of clarity, plot, dialogue and editing. Owen is good but he has been better and we should expect more from him. It's a close call.
People keep shelling out their hard-earned "buckeroonies" for these slasher killer movies that are peppered with "hot chicks" and their "beer-chugging" boyfriends....all of whom know they should not walk into dark and eerie places once the carnage begins....but they do it anyway. This is such a worn out genre....but, having said that, this movie actually held my attention and had me jumping a few times. With the genre firmly in mind and generally knowing what I should expect from this movie before walking in (& why would you go knowing this.... and then be shocked or disappointed?) I say most knowledgeable under-35 yr olds will like it and many over-45 yr olds will not. No real surprises here is the bottom line.
So - you want to hear the good news first...or the bad news? Let's start with the good news because I am recommending you see this move....as long as you see it in 3D. The 3D in this stop-motion flick is gorgeous. The 3D is effective but unobtrusive. The general story was appealing ("grass is greener" kind of tale). Sadly that takes us to the bad news list: too long, too slow and, most of all, too inconsistent as to it's audience. Sometimes I felt that there should be no children in the theater as it seemed too mature a theme and at other times I was bored by the childishness and overly cartoon-like point of view. See this movie for the next-gen 3D. A visual feast. Stay for the full titles and the last frame for an added 3D effect.
Boy - I have been waiting to see this movie as the previews looked exciting and I was ready to settle in for a psychic actioneer with some decent acting from the likes of Fanning & Hounsou. A huge disappointment. This flick is a muddled mess of a movie and the script, plot, editing, pacing and, sadly, all of the acting, even by those capable of so much more, is weak at best and laughable at worst. In summary the movie lacks clarity, realistic dialogue and an emotional connection with it's audience. It gets one star for the 15 minutes of decent action sequences carved out of the overall chaotic stew. Don't feel pushed into seeing Push. Pull away from the urge. Your time (& money) will be better spent doing virtually anything else.
This is a decent horror/suspense movie with above average acting for the genre. If I were not so starved for a good horror flick I may have had a lesser opinion ....admittedly. The movie drew me in and in spite of a plot twist that has been used before I did not see it coming. I enjoyed the effects and their timing along with the plot confusion which intentionally kept "inviting" the movie-watching audience to contemplate where such scenes derived their "reality" & origination. Crazy is as crazy does. If you like a solid adult horror-suspense tale with a big twist ending you should give this one a "fun house ride".
Another example of a movie worth seeing because of the superb acting by top-end actors - Zellweger and Simmons in particular. Without their skills this movie would have not been "watchable". Plot, script & pacing were average to below par. This is a predictable and unrealistic fable - jam-packed with stereotypes of Minnesotans in all of their "Ole & Lena" glory. The saving grace is the organic acting & timing that the 3 lead actors bring to bear. May be best to rent this one later so you can sit back in your recliner at home with some lutefisk & a cold bottle of St. Pauli Girl and focus on deciphering the words that are slurred by the exaggerated accents of some of the actors. That said....I did chuckle out loud a few times.
