This is a funny movie. There were 3 or 4 huge laughs in this movie where I laughed harder than I have in a movie in a long, long time. Rudd's best movie role. Segal is really good. He is a natural comedic movie actor. Some of the forced manipulations mid-movie and end of movie keep this from being a perfect comedy gem. This flick may make many a guy think he needs to go hunting for some additional boy pals ASAP. It's all about balance grasshoppers. Okay to let your hair down, chill out and grab a chuckle or two watching this flick. Loosen up.
Nic Cage's best work in many years. The movie has it's frustrating story arcs and leaps of logic but the premise is interesting and the accident event cinematography and special effects are some of the best I have ever seen. Overall an enjoyable weekend movie diversion for adults. Not for the younger kiddo's. I could not help feeling at the end that Hollywood pressure changed the direction the film was headed so the ending would be more generic, "new-agey" and religiously neutral. I felt this "cop-out" weakened the movie. Hey - you may think the ending is "smokin' cool". Personally, I really wanted the "whisperers" to clearly be angels from heaven....not "fuzzy ETs" from the outer abyss.
The last 20 minutes made this too-long of a movie worthwhile & changed my rating from 3 to 4 stars. Without giving it away....at least one of the 4 primary characters ends up "loving it when a plan comes together". Nice twist ending and great chemistry between Roberts & Owen. The main problem with the film is in that first 105 minutes (of the too-long movie) where it sometimes is utterly impossible to follow and decipher the intricate goings-on. While we are confused at lest we have the inter-play and banter between Roberts & Owen to keep us smiling and intrigued. Giamatti & Wilkinson are great fun as they feast on their over-the-top character's persona's. See it in the theater to fully appreciate all of the coordinated split-screen work.
This movie is a voyeuristic glimpse into the darkest imaginings of sadistic torture porn. It follows 3 sick & twisted parasitic criminals as they slime their way into the lives of some normal, mainstream folks who are trying to enjoy their summer vacation away from the big city. The production values in this movie are high caliber which tends to make the impact of the violence, rape and abuse even more startling and repellent. The middle part of the movie is well-structured and has some merit but overall the extreme violence and sadism in the beginning and end of the movie overwhelm any redeeming qualities one may find. Only for adults and only for those adults who can get home to take a shower right away after the viewing.
No need to "race" to see this okay family flick. If you miss it on the big screen it will be worth a rental viewing later. A better movie than most of the "high-brow" critics would lead you to believe. You would think they would "get the genre" and view this film through a "family movie lens"....but this is hard for many of the mainstream critics to do. Safe, predictable, good, clean fun with some action and adventure thrown in. A couple of decent PG chase scenes as well. I like Dwayne Johnson more very time I see him in a movie. Here's hoping he continues to expand his range but also continues making family films like this one.
I have seen some reels of Oscar nominated animation shorts before but this is by far the best compilation I have ever seen. It includes all 5 of the nominated shorts + 5 additional honorable mentions. All are exceptional. I thought that The Lavatory short and The Undertakers/Funeral short were the best of the lot.....but just by a hair. Lots of originality and inventiveness on display. Don't miss this animation short anthology if it comes to a theater near you. A "reel" treat!
First time in my memory that I've had the opportunity to see all 5 of the Oscar nominated live shorts on one reel. One of the live short films I had seen previously but all 5 are well done. There is some excellent international talent on the rise in the world of film-making. Treat yourself to something a bit different and check these out if you have the opportunity. Quite satisfying!
Best first - Michelle Williams does an A+ job in the role of Wendy. Now for the bad news - there is nothing here. Almost any documentary of homeless people and their struggles and joys would have been a superior movie. The movie is painful to watch and I kept thinking "why does Wendy not seek a church or community center" ....and "why does Wendy just not pay for the groceries she is attempting to shoplift?" Hollywood's contrivances apparently are to be overlooked because we should be in such deep empathy and distress as to Wendy's plight. Your time will be better spent helping at your church or volunteering at a community help center - which is what I should have done. Skip this over-played downer of a movie.
I was a huge comic book fan & collector in the late 50's, 60's, 70's....and began diverging away from buying and collecting about the time The Watchmen 12 issue graphic novel series was published in the 80's. I remember reading it when it first came out and thinking "it's really too bad that this amazing novel will never be made into a movie". It was just too big, sprawling, complex and intricate....or so I thought. Kudos to Zack Snyder and crew for proving my presumptions wrong. An amazing movie that will thrill most all of the followers of the graphic novel and many non-aficionados as well. Breath-taking in it's cinematography and visuals! Not a dull moment. Timely. Please do not miss this masterpiece in the theater.
I had high hopes for Inkheart and it fell short of my expectations. As a weekend distraction for the kiddos ...it minimally succeeds....but as a blockbuster fantasy movie that "knocks it out of the park"...it fails. Brendan Fraser plays the same character he always plays and he does it with that same "cardboard cut-out" style we have grown so accustomed to ....and are so tired of. Please give us something new Brendon so you can feel a bit prouder when you cash those big paychecks. The last 26 minutes make the first 80 barely bearable. The effects are good at the end and I actually felt some empathy...finally. Most adults will be mildly disappointed or mildly amused by this movie which only lives up to maybe 20% of the premise's potential.
