Fascinating true story - told w/ humilty & wonder

Our church recommended we see this movie and being the ever-present, eclectic movie-goers that we are....we did see it....and we loved it. Not sure why we had never heard of Arthur Blessitt and his cross-bearing journey before but we really enjoyed this bio-documentary. While others have mentioned they saw self-promotion ... we saw humility. We saw Arthur Blessitt's desire to let others know that God wants to have a relationship with us all through his personal testimony. We were amazed as we watched his act of obedience played out on the world stage. Not a perfect documentary. There could have been better production values. It could have been "slicker". On the other hand this lends to some of the documentary's charm. See it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

1980's Teenager "Angst-land" is just okay....

My gut tells me that under-30 year olds will like this movie much more than us over-50's movie theater goers. There is excellent under-stated acting by Eisenberg, Starr, Reynolds, Hader (who knew he could control himself enough to do this....)...and most of all Kristen Stewart who keeps impressing us with her range and accuracy. She is a director's dream and is nailing the roles she has been stepping into like a veteran acting "sniper". She is rapidly becoming the queen of all 20-something actresses in today's cinematic world. On the downside the movie is a bit long, a bit slow and a bit contrived in places with an over-emphasis on pot smoking and getting drunk. Worth seeing for the high-end acting.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Gassed & Glorious - Great Fun - See it!

There is a reason The Fast & Furious (The #1 flick in this series) made Vin Diesel a star....and in this sequel we are reminded of it. He seems born to play this modern-world version of Eastwood's high plains drifter. He is at his best when he is simply present on the screen, knowing we are waiting for a burst of energy from him....either directed at "the bad guy" or "riding bronco" on lots of metallic, hi-octane horse-power. Paul Walker is a good foil for Diesel and the neon-lit, gas-fumed, engine-revving street race scene....liberally seasoned with scantily-clad, curvaceous, Latino beauties & dangerous, macho, killer street thugs. It all seems to blend well into an exciting action-movie stew.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Haunting in CT is a Tale of Two Movies....

So many mediocre horror movies & so little time. Why do we keep buying tickets to see them? Perhaps we are hoping for a run of good horror flicks. Our luck, however, does not change with The Haunting in CT. It starts off promising enough with the glimmer of an interesting tale based on a true experience. Madsen, Koteas & Donovan are first-rate actors. Sadly, near the end, the suspense & horror left the theater like a balloon with a slow leak. The leaps of logic piled up and the film's tone changed. Worth a viewing for the acting and the first 60 minutes. You will not be able to stop yourself from thinking of the many ways the movie could have finished better....maybe next time.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Best Movie of 2009 - as of March 29th!

Please see this exceptional independent movie gem! Catch it in the theater before it slips away & is forgotten. This film is a rich portrait of a group of intertwined people living in a small town in upstate New York. Each character is full of texture and depth. All of the actors maximize their opportunities to flesh out their character's inner-demons and better-angels. We were shocked at how quickly the movie was over and, while the story was complete, we wanted to know more and stay with these folks just a bit longer. Great work by Dern, Cavanagh, Martin & Leto. Academy Award level work by Kristen Stewart! Kudos to writer Bartok & director Masterson! Bravo!

Predictable Actioneer - 2 Dimensional & Too Long

John Cena has potential as a decent movie action hero but he needs to surround himself with some better movie makers. Where do I start? The choppy, bouncing, hand-held camera work might be a good place to begin. It was over-used and often used in places where it logically should not have been used. Next big problem - emotion. Where is it? Explosions, killings, kidnappings and big chase scenes with no emotion, pathos and not even much sweat. Even some fakey-looking emotion would have been welcomed. Could we get some real dialogue? Better pacing & editing? Movie gets 2 stars for some nice crashes & explosions. Here is hoping John Cena can find a better A-team!
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Fun For All Ages (over 5)! See it in 3D!

The characters and voice casting stand out in this fun, family flick! It is always amazing to me to see how animators can capture the essence and facial quirks of well-known voice actors. You can see Seth Rogen in Bob the blob. You can see Reese Witherspoon in Gigantica. You can see Hugh Laurie in Dr Cockroach. Well done animators. 3D just keeps getting better & better....which bodes well for James Cameron's Avatar later this year. See it in 3D for the "full effect". Caution: we witnessed 2 families leave with their very young children who were overly frightened by the 3D visuals. Generally speaking this movie will be entertaining and good fun for young & old alike.

The Great Buck Howard....is Great!

When I was young I remember seeing The Amazing Kreskin on Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin and a slew of other talk shows. He always fascinated me and his act seemed real to me. I remember that there were some times (rare as they were) he could not bring to fruition a specific "power of the mind" demonstration. I think this made him that much more real. We cared about The Amazing Kreskin because he seemed to care so much about his craft and us. Malkovich is outstanding as Buck Howard as he "channels" the essence of Kreskin in this extremely enjoyable movie. Don't miss this perfect little piece of movie magic!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Amy Adams & Co Bring Some Sunshime Into Our Lives!

A marvelous "little" movie gem about the real people "out there" who do heroic & unheralded things to make a living and help others...every day. Blunt and Arkin are in superb form. Amy Adams is simply one of our very best young actresses & shows off her talents & range well in this flick. All are believable as they immediately draw us into their lives, their struggles and their triumphs. We have all been there. This movie is like a metaphor for life itself. It's like we are all viewing one big messy "crime scene". Our choice becomes what do we do with it? Do we run & hide....or do we confront the mess, scrub it clean, show compassion for our fellow planetary travelers and move forward with passion and determination? Enjoy the sunshine!
Yes, I recommend this movie.
