Earth - Cinematography Magic - See it!

The cinematography is breath-taking! You will find yourself slack-jawed at times in utter amazement at the sheer wonderment of animals in their natural habitat doing amazing things - fighting for survival, foraging for food & water, migrating, raising and teaching their offspring and being both predator and prey. All of this shown in pristine detail & in ultra slow-motion. It is amazing to see how far the motion picture camera has come and how amazingly it can capture and display images that before now only God has seen. Only 2 complaints - could have been longer (Earth 2 perhaps?) and could have done without some of the "subjective" narration. Gorgeous - see it on as big of a screen as you can!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Gritty, Real, Powerful - Ride This Train!

Kudos to the director, his many young, talented actors and the cinematography team! The creative team responsible for this movie shows us something that most of us have never seen....and does it so well we are transported into their world....protected by our force field movie screen. We feel their motivations, their passion and their desperation. We cannot help but think what we would do if born to their circumstances. But for the Grace of God....Do what you must to catch this great adult movie in a theater. Transformational. Don't miss it! May be the best of 2009 - so far!

Consider Yourself Informed - Skip this movie!

As far as I can tell the entire reason for this movie is to tell us all that there are awful & negative consequences for living a hedonistic lifestyle. Duh! Really? It does this by immersing us in a depressing stew of clueless people (mostly wealthy) who are all extraordinarily selfish, shallow & going nowhere. They struggle for a solution to their lonely, miserable existences by moving from one carnal sin to the next...always feeling unsatisfied...and always a bit worse. This is a morality tale told blandly and morosely. Boring. All of these people need to find a church & a larger purpose for their lives. That is the missing piece. The movie never quite gets us there. Skip it!
No, I do not recommend this movie.

The Soloist is an Orchestrated Masterpiece!

This is not your plastic, tie it up neatly in a bow, clean & sparkly Hollywood big-time movie. It is not for everyone. It is certainly not for people with low attention spans who are looking for an adrenaline rush. It is a film for adults who enjoy richly layered, complex, textured, make you think a bit, examine your own values....movies. Jamie Foxx & Robert Downey Jr. are at the top of their games and perfectly cast in this marvelous movie. Never maudlin or manipulative this movie's power is in the gritty, unvarnished look at the lives & self-realizations of the 2 primary protagonists! We can all learn a lot from their journey! Well done! Don't miss it!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Crank - Crazy High Action Camp!

The original Crank was a better movie because at least it had "it's big toe" in reality. This flick is pure camp. This is a "bad action movie" but it is done in such a high camp way that it sort-of grows on you. I was entertained for 85 minutes in a world that (thank God) does not exist. This movie is like a dream that Stratham might have had as he was considering doing the movie. Frenetic pace and steroidal insanity. You should be over 21 and thinking "early Tarantino" with a little more comic book thrown in. See it or rent it. Not for the kiddies.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Great Story - Great Acting - Well Done! See it!

State of Play is a tightly edited, well-scripted, superbly acted original thriller. Crowe, McAdams, Mirren are all at the top of their game.....not to mention Ben Affleck. Affleck, in this movie, jars us back to realizing that he can be a high-end actor. He nails the congressman's persona in all of it's complexity and layered dimensions. Kudos to director MacDonald. Nothing is wasted in this movie and the pacing is some of the best I have seen in quite a long time. Don't miss the opportunity to catch this quality adult movie in a theater.

Decent "If you had your life to live over" flick

We were not the target audience for this move - obviously. If we were 20 years younger most likely would have given it 4 stars ....and 40 years younger probably would have given it 5. Age does matter. Enough with the math. This theme has been done many times before but Zac Efron does a quality job in the lead. The rest of the cast is excellent as well. In between the shrieks and screams from the female teenage Zac-arites in the audience I caught myself laughing out loud several times and was engaged throughout. See it for sure if you are under 35. For the rest us flip a coin or rent it. Clean fun for anyone over 12 years old.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A "too bad so few will see it", small movie, mini-masterpiece. Do yourself a favor and seek this film out and do your best to see it in the theater. Complex story - yet so easy to follow. Intricate emotions - yet so easy to empathize with. Multi-layered acting - yet fully actuated and believable at every turn. The director, James Gray, does high-end work with the story, cinematography & pacing....keeping us locked on the screen and his characters. We care about all of them....on all levels. Rare that a movie of this type has such a happy ending....or is it? I vote yes! Bravo to all of the actors, the director and his creative team! Well done!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Here is My Observation & Report....

If you enjoy dark, dark (approaching "nut-ville") movie humor you will likely get a few belly laughs, many snickers and generally enjoy this movie. There are some really funny scenes between Rogen and his mall security team, the police, his mother & his love interest. The film misses potential perfection because it "goes schizo" at the half-way point. It stays dark but it forgets it's comedic soul as it heads down a path that is much less funny and much more downright scary. I wanted to keep laughing but could not escape the feeling that "this guy really needs some help" before he hurts himself & others. Too much empathy and not enough comedy in that last 30 minutes.Worth a viewing if you like your comedy dark, well-done and a bit crispy.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Draggin' All Into De-evolution - Skip it!

Never read the comic or graphic form this movie "evolved from"....so my review is based from a pure movie-goer's viewpoint. This flick is really lame. Everything seemed fake, coated in "silly dust" and decorated with fake smoke & sparkles. Not sure how an 85 minute action movie can seem too long....but movie scientists should study this one because it felt like forever. Maybe I would have had a different take if I was a fan of the genre, under 25 years old and had fairly weak quality standards. If you think one of the best shows on TV is Power Rangers on Saturday mornings you may dig this movie....otherwise save your bucks.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
