How Easy is This? Easy A Gets an "A"! See it!

An unusual and inventive comedy that centers on the teenage angst surrounding s*x, status and acceptance. Dircetor Will Gluck and writer Bert Royal hit all the right nerves including our funny bones - often and with a deft touch. The dialogue is crisp and funny - certainly when it is supposed to be. Emma Stone is magnificent and her supporting cast parents, played by Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson are simply perfect! I could have watched them for hours on end. A "teenage" comedy that will appeal to teens and adults across a broad spectrum. This movie is an A+ endorphin stimulator. See it - feel better and live longer.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Devil is a Creepy Morality Tale - Told Well....

With M. Night Shyamalan's recent run of below par movies I was really not expecting much. I was hoping, though, that this would not be a typical slasher pic and, to my surprise, it was not. It was a "cut above". The writer, director and actors all do a great job in this morality tale that takes several twists and turns and succeeds in keeping us all guessing until the last few minutes. How unusual that the movie ends on a spiritual positive note when nearly 100% of the time a movie in this genre wants to hint at the monster's survival and a sequel. Bravo to all involved in this unusual "horror movie" with a positive message. This may hint that M. Night Shyamalan has "turned the corner". Time will tell.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Lebanon is a Claustraphobic Amazing Work of Art!

Don't miss Lebanon if: You like gritty, psychological, intense war movies that are well acted and present an original, never-before-seen viewpoint of war at it's most basic level. There are so many disturbing scenes in Lebanon that it is useless to try and list them in a short review of the film. Just know that they are all in context and done in a very believable way on-screen. The theater was packed and I saw at least 6 people get up and leave the theater during the movie. It was likely not what they expected and Lebanon is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. For most adults it will be worth the investment of 94 minutes and you will appreciate the perspective and the the risk that the film makers took in making the movie in the way that they did. The only negative I experienced was the feeling I needed to get home and take a shower right away once the movie ended.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

RE:A is a visual action feast

This action, graphic, violent, post-apocalyptic, born of a video game movie hits most of it's marks for the genre it falls into. When you go to a Milla Jovovich actioneer based on a violent video game one would assume that it will be something like Resident Evil: Afterlife. I liked the sheer no-brainer action, the scope and visual panoramas, the crazy zombie-like creatures, and especially the giant guy with the massive axe! Very cool visual goings-on. Wentworth Miller makes a successful transition from Prison Break to silver screen zombie killer. Lower your critical standards and just go with the flow in this "last humans vs. the crazies" movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Entertaining Family Movie w Quality Actors

Legendary is a family oriented movie that is assisted in it's delivery by the presence of some top notch actors - like Patricia Clarkson and Danny Glover. John Cena is also not bad and shows a deft touch in subtler scenes. The story is a bit "vanilla" for my taste but the lessons are true and the movie is well put together. Worth seeking out for a family movie afternoon on the weekend.

The raw laws of nature are on full display in....

.... Animal Kingdom. Well-done Australian film about a matriarchal crime family vs. a corrupt police force and the innocents that are impacted and corrupted while caught in the middle. Quality acting that is even better than the excellent script and dialogue. An engrossing movie that will have you laughing at times and then have you cringing and shaking your head as you watch people being overtaken by their greed, suspicion, selfishness and violence. In the end this is a severe, fluorescent-lit look at a dysfunctional, violent crime family and the impact from the wake of their destructive path on the people around them. Well done adult movie. Kudos to all involved.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The American will not be everyone's cup of tea....

... but it was the perfect afternoon visual cinematic "snack" for me. Loved the whole movie from beginning to end. The problem, I think, for many, is with expectations created from the marketing. Many people were, undoubtedly, expecting high action with lots of violence and obvious tension. That is not this film. I appreciated Clooney's restrained performance more than most of his big screen roles. In fact this may be my favorite Clooney role ever. Gorgeous scenery very well filmed. Great atmosphere! Recommended for mature movie watchers (over 45) that have a taste for independent films, are contemplative and discerning.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Grading on the Grindhouse Curve Machete Gets An A!

Machete is a gory, sexy, gritty, fast-paced, grind house actinoneer that scores high in the genre it proudly places itself in! This is a 2-dimensional romp that will have you chucking and "ooohing" throughout. Lots of familiar actor-faces that add to the flavor and "we get the humor" side of this flick. Put your politics to the side, place your tongue firmly in your cheek, let go of all of your "upper crust film critic snobbery" and just go with it. Yeeeehaw!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Kepp Your Distance From Going The Distance! Ugh!

What a let down. Did not expect much and it still did not live up to my very low expectations. Drew Barrymore may have lost some long-time fans with this "waste of 97 minutes". My wife of 33 years would not think of missing a Drew Barrymore flick ..... and now, having seen ""Going The Distance" she is honestly not sure if she will feel compelled to go to the next one. Why - you may ask - so harsh a rebuke? So many reasons - unnecessary foul language, lack of chemistry, unbelievable "set up", overly contrived scenes, overt and feeble attempts at humor, over-used repetitive "gags", oft-stilted dialogue, lack of empathy for the primary (& secondary characters) ..... virtually no redeeming qualities whatsoever. You know you wasted some movie money when, halfway through the movie, you enjoy the graphic of an airplane icon following a dotted line across a map from LA to NY and actually think that this may be the best scene in the movie since it began. Yucky-poo! Better to stay home & rent "Ever After".
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Mao's Last Dancer - A True Story Well Told!

Mao's Last Dancer is a gorgeously filmed bio pic about the accomplished Chinese dancer and defector. This is an adult movie with no foul language, no blatant sex scenes and no violence. One would think that it would need to inhabit some deep cerebral world in order to be captivating - but it avoids the tempting manipulation. This is simply a story told directly without hyper-analysis, over-thinking and unnecessary foofaraw. Reminder that this is one of those films you will want to stay seated for at the end to see what has happened to all of these real-life characters over the last 15 years. Kudos to the entire film-making team!
