Dandelion Dust - Emotional & Worthwhile Film....

"Like Dandelion Dust" is an exploration of biology vs. nurture and it takes us on an amazing journey into the complex emotional world of where we are born, what choices unfold and the consequences of our actions. Mira Sorvino does a great job in her portrayal of the mother who gives up her newborn child because of her circumstances and then must help herself and all of those around her deal with tough realities 7 years later. It is a rare movie that can entertain and teach us things about ourselves that touch the depths of who we are. This movie does just that! Hope to see more of Mira Sorvino in dramatic roles in the future. Kudos to all involved.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Social Network Hits All The Right Buttons!

I was very skeptical about The Social Network. Thought it would be overly nerdy, dry and boring. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The movie's 2 hours flew by and I was fully involved in the story and characters the entire time. Eisenberg, Timberlake and Mazzello all do an A+ job as the leads. I'm not sure how much of the detail in the story is true but we all know the overall ark of the story is true. This one goes in to TheMovieRhino's Top 10 for 2010. Make sure you download this movie into your brain at a theater - don't miss it!

You Will Dig Buried - It Is An Unearthed Treasure!

Ryan Reynolds re-defines his reputation as an actor in "Buried". He is amazing - to say the least. I was skeptical as to how a 100 minute movie filmed entirely inside a plain wood coffin could be the least bit entertaining. I was held entranced for every minute. Incredible film-making! Not gimmicky. This film is full of drama, pathos, suspense, mystery, humor, action - you name it - it is all there .... and all done from inside a coffin! Kudos to all. My only complaint is the ending which was predictable and seemed to be the only "contrived piece". Well worth your move dollar investment. Seek it out.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Case Against Case 39....

I like Renee Zellweger's acting - typically. I like horror movies - typically - especially original and well-made horror movies. I had high hopes for Case 39 and thought that the many negative reviews could be based on "elitist snobbery" from mainstream critics. Sadly, this is not the "case". This movie is not original and it is very predictable. It telegraphs everything from miles away. The acting is not up to par for the acting talent that is in this movie. This is likely the fault of the story, director and script. Better to stay home and rent better movies of the same ilk - like The Exorcist and The Omen.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Let Me In - A Good Re-Make with A Different Flavor
PostedOctober 2, 2010

There are some scenes in "Let Me In" that appear to be verbatim - almost "copy and pasted" from the original masterpiece "let The Right One In". On the other hand director Reeves "fleshes out" the original, providing more gore, effects and dialogue. This creates a different overall ambiance than the original - leaning heavier on visual shock and horror - less on imagination. In this new version, largely because of the violence and gore portrayed so graphically, there is less sympathy for perpetually 12-year old Abby. I enjoyed "Let Me In" a lot but not quite as much as "let The Right One In". Perhaps a good analogy would be the original radio Orson Wells version of War of The Worlds as compared to the Gene Barry movie version and the more recent Tom Cruise movie version. All enjoyable renditions but oh what an impact that old radio play had on the listening public! TheMovieRhino recommends that you see Let Me In!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Bran Nue Dae Wil Make Yur Dae - Sees it!

When was the last time you saw an aboriginal Musical Comedy movie that starred aboriginal actors and at least one A-list actor like Geofffrey Rush? Never you say? Well .... that's the point. This film is an original movie that speaks proudly about aborigines while taking us on an entertaining journey about "coming of age" and finding out the "truth about oneself". If it was any longer than it's 88 minutes it would likely be too long. There are a few slow spots but the singing and the interesting characters and interesting twists make up for it and more. I say give "Tadpole" his own movie .... or maybe a TV series .... like "Tadpole and Son".
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Jack Goes Boating - And We Get To Watch
PostedSeptember 26, 2010

Jack is just a good guy. He is an innocent who has somehow been inoculated against the narcissism and cynicism that the world is constantly trying to inject. Will Jack ever find true love? It almost seems impossible and then - it happens. Now Jack, with the help of his few friends, must invest in learning some new skills - skills that will aid him in his romantic journey - skills like swimming .... and cooking. Philip Seymour Hoffman direct and stars in a movie that takes what most of us would see as mundane and he imbues Jack and his world with magic. We empathize with Jack and his journey. We root for him and understand the frustration and longing of the "sophisticates" around Jack that feel "superior" and jealous of Jack - at the same time. A thoroughly enjoyable character study. Can't wait for part II! Jack Goes Hiking anyone?
Yes, I recommend this movie.

You Again Hits Many of the Right Karmic Buttons

Karma, Deja Vu, Law of the Universe, Reap What you Sow, Murphy's Law, Do Unto Others.... all of these universal truths about what "goes around comes around" are at the heart of the comedy flick - "You Again". This is not a perfect movie but pretty darn close for a PG comedy flick. I was chuckling throughout most of the movie and even guffawed several times. It got a little too serious for me near the end when everyone was "learning their lesson" but I can forgive that final 10 minutes of sentimentality. Bell, Curtis and Weaver add just the right amount of thespian heft. Give your endorphin glands something to do and check out "You Again".
Yes, I recommend this movie.

LOTG is a Gorgeous Family Movie Worth Seeing
PostedSeptember 26, 2010

While the plot in Legends of the Guardians is indeed formulaic - the CGI 3D animation is state of the art - and makes this movie exceptional - it's that good! The feathers on the owls look more real than actual feathers. CGI technology just keeps "kicking it up a notch" and this gorgeous film takes full advantage. The voice work is also A+! Overall this film is a more than worthy effort for a family audience. Best seen on a full-size movie screen in 3D to enjoy the full spectacle.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Affleck Does it Again with "The Town"! See it!

After "Gone Baby Gone" I thought we were witnessing one of filmdom's newest and greatest directors in Ben Affleck. Affleck does it once again, even better, with "The Town". The Town should earn Affleck a best director nod for the Oscars - if there is justice. It is so rare these days to see a suspense drama told in such a believable, entertaining way. Affleck and his bevy of talented crew and actors create a sumptuous stew of drama, humor, irony, violence, love story, back story .... you name it .... and they hit everything on all cylinders. Affleck "knocks this one out of Fenway Park"! See it on the big screen! In TheMovieRhino's Top 10 for 2010.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
