Harry Potter's Setting Up The Final Act...

There is much to like about about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part I .... it is just a shame that the studio and production company decided to to make 2 movies instead of 1. This older, darker Harry Potter and friends (and enemies) is intriguing. I just wanted more to happen and more resolution at the end. Instead we get the tease for the real final Harry Potter movie chapter. One could feel, at times, an effort to stretch this movie out when it did not need to be. All in all a worthy effort and an admirable new volume in the Potter movie saga.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

My Dog Tulip is a Special Ode to Man's Best Friend

First I want to guarantee you that you will not see another film that is anything remotely like "My Dog Tulip" - live action or animated. It is unique indeed. It is an adult movie - perhaps for people over 30 even - about intelligence, loneliness, insecurity and unconditional love. If you have owned and been close to a dog in your life you will, undoubtedly, often relate to many of the goings-on, including the human interpretations of Tulip's actions. The animation is perfect for the subject and all of the voice work is just as as superb - especially Christopher Plummer in a voice-over narration role. He makes this quaint film Oscar-worthy for its genre (whatever that is?). See it in a theater if the opportunity affords. It will make your tail wag!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Good and Bad - The Next Three Days

I liked the premise, the setting and the cast - all strong! The real problem here is the script, dialogue and pacing. Too many times in the first half I found myself looking at my watch ... not good. The last half did pick up steam and drew me back in but it just took too dog-gone long to get there! Worth seeing - perhaps as a rental.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I Command You To See MegaMind in 3D (please)....

3D animation just keeps getting better and better. Amazing 3D graphics in MegaMind 3D! This alone would make seeing the film worthwhile. DreamWorks again does a masterful job of putting together a "super" animated movie for the whole family ...and did I mention how great the 3D animation is? Enjoyed all of the silliness. Lots of humor - both slapstick and tongue-in-cheek. Found myself grinning, chuckling and even guffawing a few times! Perfect voice work. Never could hear Brad Pitt's voice in the hero. He sounded more like a combination George Clooney/Bruce Campbell (great voice though). Will Ferrell and Tina Fey are both spot on. A fun, 3D, animated romp worth seeing!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Unstoppable should be "Unmissable" - see it!

Unstoppable is one of the best movies of the year! It is based on true events and has near-perfect writing, editing, cinematography and acting! The story itself is the star and we are taken along for the ride. Washington and Pine are perfectly cast and all of the acting is A-one! Hop a freight train down to your nearest movie theater depot and prepare yourself for an exciting clickity-clack journey down the railroad track. I now have a very clear impression of what a million tons of metal traveling at 75 miles an hour is all about. Amazing! Powerful movie!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Skyline Tries Hard but Misses Target....
PostedNovember 14, 2010

Skyline is a low-budget attempt to put a big-time Alien Invasion on the big screen. One can see that they really worked hard to make every penny work BUT the effort falls short in many areas - writing and dialogue - included. I liked the basic idea behind the invasion regarding the light infection and corralling people into the ships. It has just never made sense to me that big, slimy dirty aliens want to grab us and eat us but they inhabit and use such extraordinary technology. There is simply a logical piece missing - at least for me. Two stars for effort, some of the ideas and some of the special effects. Maybe worth a rental in a couple of months.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Morning Glory - not Glorious - but Watchable..
PostedNovember 14, 2010

Morning Glory is a bit too formulaic and cutesy for my taste - but, having said that, it does what it does very well - thanks almost entirely to the acting. If the writing and script were just a bit more complex it would have a chance to be a comedy classic. Harrison Ford is as crusty as crusty gets, Diane Keaton is as good of a Meredith Viera as Viera herself, Jeff Goldblum is perfect in his role as McAdam's boss and McAdams is as cute, ditsy, sexy, energetic and bushy-eyed as she ever has been! These actors are top-notch in a 2-dimensional movie that hints of increased complexity but never takes us there. Morning Glory is a fun, breezy date-night comedy that is worth a look if you are looking for a light, tasty quick movie snack. Okay to leave your brain at home - you won't be needing it for this flick.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Okay To See Saw (3D) With Some Caveats ....

... and here they are: 1) You must know what the SAW movies are all about by now so please do not go if you are expecting something other than gruesome torturous death scenes graphically portrayed in full-color and stereo sound 2) No need to go if you know what the SAW movies entail but only want to go to see lots of series ending twists and turns - really be surprised - you won't be 3) Skip this one if you only want to see it because it really is the last SAW movie - the ending leaves plenty of opportunities for SAW 43 and beyond. All of this said - I enjoyed the 3D, the new "traps" and the continuing "twisted" tale of proving the value of life by seeing how dedicated one can be to extreme measures in saving themselves and others.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Due Date Hits Enough Funny Bones to Recommend it

.... But it could have been better. In the trailer the scenes with Galifianakis's character bouncing up and down in the back of the pickup truck were funny BUT in the actual movie those scenes had a different flavor - they seemed almost cruel. I would have preferred a more slapstick comedy overall. It seems to me that both main characters were very unlikeable and I did not get a clear picture of what really drives the two together in the end. There were a couple of gratuitous "R" scenes that really were not needed and more embarrassing than funny. Could have been a classic 5star comedy if not for these imperfections - still worth seeing - just know there is crudeness at times.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Jury is in - See Conviction!

Conviction is based on a true story. The film is well-made and well-acted. Nothing appears sugar-coated and the story does a decent job of covering nearly 30 years in the lives of the primary characters in just 107 minutes. All of the actors were in peak form but a special acknowledgment must go out to both Sam Rockwell and Juliette Lewis! Believed every ounce of their on-screen personas! Amazing! An inspiring story that will underscore the power of the human spirit and sibling love in times of intense emotional tribulation. A triumphant true life tale and an almost equally well-done movie! Don't miss it!
