Cute Film.

I purposefully watched this film in 2D. The story was okay, there were a few laughs, and there were some cool things to see visually. I could tell by how some things were shot that certain scenes were certainly meant to be seen in the 3D format. While realizing I didn't appreciate the full ascetic effects of the film without watching it in its intended form, I was also aware that what was offered was not worth the extra money. Megamind was a pretty good movie, and I would recommend seeing it. But it is among many movies that needlessly attempts to exploit a gimmick. Certain story elements bordered on genius in their insight into what it may mean to be a criminal or a super-being, and yet these were used more as props to support an often silly dialogue or, again, a series of gratuitously needless special effects.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I enjoy inappropriate humor--this comedy has enough of it for me to laugh and make persons with less perverse senses of humor cringe. If you like the idea of nasty people getting what's coming to them in a way that puts a smile on your face, this film is for you. If you like characters that are complex enough for you to alternate being disgusted with them and sympathizing for them, this film is for you. If you think that comedians try too hard to be crude and irreverent to get a laugh, check out some other films, cause you will question if the writers even know that there just may be lines you shouldn't cross.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Perplexed, I hesitated
Momentarily taken aback
By the beautiful, song like prose
That arose from the depths
From the expressions of disappointment
And pain.
Through song and dance
Through motion and stills
A heart piercing glance
At my mothers', sisters', daughters', &lovers'
battles with the day to day
and their souls triumphant gain.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A nicely done run of the mill romantic comedy fit for something to do on a night out where you just want to sit back and relax and have a good time. Much like a bowl of good vanilla ice cream, you'll readily knock it if you are looking for an exotic experience.; but when you want the joys of familiar comfort, nothing beats it.

This was a good, even appropriate, end to the SAW series. First, it allows for other movies to be made in the series (which seems to be a staple of horror movie franchises--being able to "end" the series, and yet still make additional films). Second, the traps were awesome and inspired. Third, the movie closes up some loose ends from other films. And fourth, the 3D was more often more valuable of an experience than I've seen in other films.
But I was a little disappointed. First, the acting in the films has gotten progressively cheesier as the films have progressed, but there was always the payoff that the parts of the story presented actually revealed a very complex and ingenious plan in the end. There was no sense of that here--the story was relatively straight forward, there were no really surprises, and the mantel of power and control of the game was not clearly handed over to the one who ultimately deserves it in the end.
***SPOILERS***
In line with this, I felt there was too little of essence of John ("Jigsaw") in this movie. The other movies gave you a sense of his immortality. This movie gives you a sense that he died by fizzling away. A good end, but without climax.
John's wife seems to be out of character. The other movies gave you the sense that she typically would be considered above and/or removed from John's twisted and skewed ideas of justice and redemption; she seemed like someone who would honor her husband's request to honor her love for him, not because she agreed with or was integral to his plans. Not so much in this movie.
The doctor from the first movie plays an important role here, but even though he does you feel he is under utilized. In a lot of ways it's his character and the underdevelopment thereof that makes this movie good, but not great. And with the final chapter, you really are looking for greatness, because the SAW series was truly an epic ride.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is another one of those well done, informative and educational, call-to-action films. I am not sure of what I will do. For now I hope many more people see this film.

If you haven't seen the first movie, you really should before you see this one, for several reasons. First, it will help you appreciate what is going on in the story. Old characters become more interesting and more developed. The story line overall will probably make more sense. Second, what was notable in the first movie was truly improved upon and outstanding in this movie. Special effects, sound and music, and various lighting is truly done well. Third, you will more likely appreciate the time it takes for the movie to develop. And it does develop slowly, making the movie (especially with all the trailers nowadays) seem longer than 90 minutes. But unlike a lot of movies, the payoff is there--man is the payoff there! A very enjoyable extension to the original, it is a prequel, "parallelaquel", and sequel all rolled into one.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This is a cute and fun movie, but a little contrived. Probably would have benefited, as so many movies would, from not having several of the best parts of the movie shown in the commercials. The star power is great, and for the most part they do well. Even still, maybe it's because the star power is so great that, while I am sure these guys and gals enjoy making fun movies, I felt their capacities were so much greater than the script material this movie offers. Mary-Louise Parker, however, does actually pull off being a plain Jane personality, yet maintain herself as being as gorgeous as ever. Bruce Willis can get away with doing a movie like this because he is known for doing great and not so great roles, yet maintain himself as beloved and entertaining; plus, the role is great for him to be able to say "I recognize I am getting old, but I still got it!" John Malkovich's role is a little over the top, even for a comedy, and even for him. And Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman just seem too classy (forgive my bias). I didn't think highly of the film devices used for transition in the movie from one location to another. And yet with all I've said, I think most will probably leave the theater satisfied to have seen a lighthearted and enjoyable flick.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

An Unintentionally Scary Movie.

This is a well acted drama with the a socially pertinent story. Definitely worth the price of admission, hopefully deemed worthwhile by audiences for consideration and discussion. Truly a scary film in how subtle it is; we as the audience accept the premise as just another story, and yet hopefully people will gather the moral outrage that should ensue. Sadly, this may not happen; instead, I could easily see this premise occurring today (so many things have happened, and are now happening, that so many just are unaware of or to which so many turn a blind eye). Interestingly, it seems that more and more stories are moving away from the distinctions of race and yet still maintain the distinctions of hierarchy and castes of human beings. This movie may carry some of the same warnings one may have when facing Lucifer--the images you see will be beautiful, the reasoning for what you see will be undoubtably logical and understandable, but if you accept this then you are accepting evil, murder clothed in the hope for the health and evolution of mankind (killing not only those bodies on the bottom of this caste system, but also the souls of those who benefit from this atrocity). I really hope that people will consider the warning, but that hope is weak if evolution is considered so much more valuable, real, and tangible than spirituality and truth. I may be projecting on to others my own self criticism, so I hope I'm wrong. But anyway, this was a good movie to watch.

Definitely worth the price of admission. A well written and directed film. The action choppiness that seems to be standard in film shooting during action scenes is used well here. I don't know much about Boston personally, but the film seemed to embrace a substantial amount of the essence of the town--almost felt like a character in and of itself, with little human organisms running around it struggling for their place within their chosen host. Ben Affleck has clearly reestablished his coolest. Rebecca Hall was definitely worth risking a lifetime in prison in order to be with her. Jeremy Renner continues to be a scary dude (he's that kind of dude you are not sure whether of not you should be intimidated by him, but you know that whatever you do to him he won't back down--and he's all too willing to be an fight instigator). Funny that out of all these people, only Affleck is actually from Boston. Funnier that how the people of Boston, particularly in this subsection of Boston, have avoided the stigma and connotation of "inner city folk," and how the amount of robbery and violence that the film purports occurring in Boston seems woefully under reported in these United States. The story becomes an interesting account of white peoples struggles with poverty, family, and community outside of backcountry rural America. The story also seems to reflect the paradox in how criminals from "the hood" or "the ghetto" or "the projects" are without qualm deemed the dregs of society, wrongfully awed as heroes of their communities; yet mobsters and bank robbers, as depicted here, are well respected--the cops are portrayed almost like merely another group of people (almost like the English vs. the Irish) than a force for good or law&order.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
