Dizzying View

I go annually to the Royal Opera House, and love Carmen. As I expected, the singing was excellent. I particularly loved Jose's aria about the flower, and the children's singing/actions.
Nevertheless, the 3D shenanigans were dizzying. I almost had a seizure when watching the film. The technology has not been mastered, aside from the fact that it is distracting.
I paid for the singing, and got an optical illusion.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Great Singing But Poor Facilities and Equipment

Singing was wonderful. As usual at this theater, however, there were problems with the facilities and equipment. The house was almost full, though many members of the audience arrived late. Until the matter was forced, there was no usher available, and late arrivals (many of whom were elderly) had to stumble around in the dark. Furthermore, I had to interrupt my own viewing in order to answer questions of stumbling audience members. For shame! As for the HD equipment, there were times when the singers' voices were out of sync with their facial and lip movements.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I had seen this production earlier in the season, and enjoyed seeing the encore. I appreciated the absence of intermissions. The singing was wonderful. As always, I loved the choral pieces.
As is often the case at this theater, there were several glitches, and the movie started late.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Placido's Still Got It

This was my introduction to Boccanegra, and I loved the entire production. I was highly focused on Placido's performance, in light of his age, his unbelievable schedule, and his recent hospitalization and imminent surgery. Placido, throughout, had the energy and voice of a younger man. At one point, water streamed down his face, and I believed that it represented tears. The set, costume, singing, and orchestral performance were all great.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Queenly Renee Fleming

I loved the production. Renee Fleming was superbly beautiful, and had queenly deportment (despite rollicking with Octavian). Susan Graham as Octavian was believable, in both facial expression and body language. Her singing was superb. My only problem with her was her superfluous "busy-ness" during Act I, when she allegedly was trying to leave the room. Kristinn was hilariously and effectively offensive as Ochs, though during Act I he often did not look at the person whom he was addressing. The music composition was superb, not the least important aspect being the waltzes -- I felt that Richard Strauss was at least Johann Strauss's equal in composing superb waltz music.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
