Take a hit Broadway music tailor-made for a film adaption - cut out all the good songs and replace with bad ones to cover up the perfromer's vocal shortcomings, rewrite the entire plot so that it makes no sense and film everything like a MTV video - this is the recipe that sunk what should have been a slam-dunk. Fergie comes out unscathed. Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman and Sophie Loren can at least carry a tune. Judi Dench can barely sing and let alone dance. The true winner here was Antonio Banderas whose perfromance in the 2003 Broadway remains the benchmark and he was spared being embarassed by this poorly executed mess.
