A good effort by Mozart

As usual, an excellent effort by the Met Opera singers, sets, chorus -- they were all in top form, except for the tenor (Tito). He seemed to run out of gas toward the end of the second act. But he was very good up until then. The only real complaint was with the HD transmission. The show started one half hour late, but no free popcorn for the disappointed and restless audience.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Soloists and chorus exhibited the expected excellence. Iago's singer was especially good at displaying the warped, demented emotions of that character. In addition to her vocal skills as Desdemona, the camera loves Renee Fleming, and it showed in the HD close-ups. The orchestra and conductor rendered Verdi's score very well. The scenery complimented the action and the music very well. The video transmission had no glitches. All in all, very worthwhile going to see.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

There is really nothing to complain about with this opera in HD. The cast, the scenery, and the orchestra were in top form. This particular rendition of Donizetti's opera made the work come to life, especially the tenor's solo aria in the second act. As usual, I prefer the opera in HD over being in the opera house. There is just so much more to see and hear. And you feel as if you are sitting on the stage with the performers instead of several hundred feet away from them.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Don Giovanni as seen from an easy chair

A very enjoyable production of Mozart's. The singers were in top form, and for the most part, they acted their roles convincingly. I would have liked to have one or two quick shots on the conductor, Luisi, at the harpsichord for the recitatives. The costumes were excellent, but the look of the scenery was just OK. The design of the scenery did help move the action along more quickly. If you are a Mozart fan, this production was worth seeing.

Not being a Wagner groupie, I come to Wagner's operas with scepticism. But I do admit that the Met Opera's current production of the Ring cycle has been very enjoyable. The performers have been outstanding, the sets and costumes attractive, and the overall production very good looking and professional. I am able to follow Wagner's complicated story line without too much trouble, unlike a recent over-the-top avant garde production I witnessed. I'm looking forward to the 4th and final chapter of the Ring cycle (Gotterdammerung) early in 2012.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Anna Bolena as seen from an easy chair

Thoroughly enjoyed this performance as it demonstrated that Donizetti can compose with a little more depth than some of his other operas, though all his operas are enjoyable. The cast was superb as it seems all these HD casts are and that includes the scenery and costumes.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

La Fille du Regiment as seen from an easy chair

Enjoyable and very entertaining! For an evening's light entertainment, La Fille is highly recommended. The entire cast is up to the task of light comedy, the action never ceases, and the singers provide the necessary vocal fireworks.

Madama Butterfly as seen from an easy chair

Enjoyed this summer encore performance of Madama Butterfly as I had missed the original HD movie theater transmission. The stage settings were not so modernistic as to be confusing and the performers were not only excellent singers but pretty decent actors. Their facial and body emotional expressions, along with the music, added to the tragedy of the opera. And I did like the use of a puppet child rather than a human child. HD opera camera work is excellent.
An added benefit for me of the summer encore performances are no long intermissions (but I know others will disagree). The continuity of the story is better maintained without the long intermissions.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Don Pasquale as seen from an easy chair

A delightful comedy by Donizetti. The singers were just right for the roles -- Netrebko, Polenzani, Kwiecien, Del Carlo. They fit the characters as you would expect. And Donizetti's music is superb for the bel canto style. Walked out of the performance in a very good mood. Can't praise the HD transmissions on the big movie screens enough for the excellent video experiences. The behind-the-scenes activity that one never sees in the audience at the live theater production is an added bonus.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Boris Godunov as seen from an easy chair

Rene Pape was excellent as the emotionally tortured Boris. I thought he captured the essence of the role. And his voice was in the tradition of the Russian enchantment with the bass voice. The sets were minimal but worked well to focus attention on the intrigue and the tragedy of the story. It was seeing the revolving nature of human foible from a Russian perspective -- similar, in a way, to Wagner's Ring Cycle circular view of human tragedy.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
