Sorry...I really, really wanted to like this movie. Unfortunately, it's a miss on many levels. If my 9-year old son and I hadn't seen it in IMAX 3D it would've been a complete waste of time and money. Yes, it was visually stunning but I really felt like that's all it was. Seriously lacking in both plot and acting. Johnny Depp seemed to just be re-prising his role as Willy Wonka only in different make up.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Wow! Visually it was absolutely beautiful and at times so stunning that it made you question what was real and what was CGI. The story line was a bit predictable but carried deep political meaning that as an adult I appreciated. It evoked emotion and still does a week later. I brought my son and his friend, both 9 years old and they admit to dozing off in the middle of the 160 min. extravaganza. I guess, in this "fast food" world, our kids expect to be entertained quickly as well. With that being said, I get that they were bored at times, it's not really geared to 9 year olds...I wouldn't recommend it for kids under 15. Not because of violence or language but more for their inability to become engaged with the deeper concepts of the movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
