OK, I give this movie 3 1/2 stars. First the pros: Daniel Radcliffe is incredibly handsome w/his black hair, sideburns and soulful blue eyes. I didn't think "Harry" once! Tho it took a little getting used to seeing him in an adult role (DR is 22, playing a 25 y/o widower/dad, tho I guess that's not overly implausible from that era.) Cinematography and set design was gorgeous. Very bleak, cold, dark, really set the mood. And those darn creepy wind-up musical toys...did kids of yore REALLY like those things??! I did appreciate that there wasn't a lot of blood & gore. This felt like a much classier production than a 'Nightmare on Elm Street' type slasher film. Now for the Cons: I think the director waaaay over-used the 'pop out and scare you' technique. It got a little old about 3/4 of the way thru. Tho it was funny hearing a theater full of shrieking tween/teens, lol! The kids & their role in the movie were quite disturbing and the ending was sad, yet happy, yet...sad.
Saw the midnight movie w/my two 13 yr. olds. I wasn't looking forward to 'saying goodbye' to the beloved Potter franchise, but this movie was so beautifully made and all the loose ends were tied up in a neat bow, that I didn't really feel as sad as I was expecting to, in the end. I felt elated for the director, the actors (who did an incredible job; Dan Radcliffe after the pensieve scene...just wow! has he come a long way!! Alan Rickman & the boathouse scene...gulp!), as well as for the whole HP crew who brought this 10 yr. [movie] saga to a satisfying end. I am a happy, happy fan! I hope that kids will continue to read the Potter books and enjoy the companion movies for generations to come. Long Live Harry Potter! ;-D
I saw the midnight show on IMAX (so worth it if you're a true-blue HP fan; the colors were bright and crisp) I'm a huge HP fan and am always a little nervous that the directors will butcher the books. This is the first HP movie since COS where I felt that they followed the book closely. (sooo happy they decided to do a Pt 1 & 2 = 5 hrs!!). Definitely scary...not for the younger viewer (under 10 or 11). That Voldemort is EVIL!! Nagini! And Bellatrix is one psycho witch! Loved Lucius in this one! Thought Emma/Dan/Rupert did a phenomenal acting job. A little bummed that they didn't show the "Luna mural" and yes, if you haven't read the books you'll be like "Why the heck is Harry carrying around a shard of glass?!" This was dropped from a previous book (3rd? 5th?) and of course is now an important plot point in the final book! There was so much speculation about where the break between Movie 1 & 2 would be. I think they ended 1 perfectly! Voldie 1~Dumbledore 0. Can't WAIT till July to see the final Harry Potter film!
My kids and I were disappointed that only 15 minutes of the movie was in 3-D. What a let-down! The cave scene would've been a perfect use of 3D technology! I don't quite understand what's involved w/this technology but it seems that a top grossing film like HP could afford to do the whole thing in 3D. Especially for the premium ticket price of $15.50! I did appreciate the big screen and the crisp details that IMAX offers. I caught a lot more detail this time around, such as the wonderful Weasley joke shop, including the hysterical Umbridge toy! I'll bet JKR wished she'd thought of that one! So...if you're an HP FANatic like me, the IMAX semi/3D experience was worth it.
