I must disagree with what appears to be the majority of other reviewers here. Anyone who says that Birdemic: Shock and Terror cannot be enjoyed without a rifftrax (humorous commentary) has probably never seen the movie without rifftrax.
Birdemic became a cult blockbuster being watched by thousands of fans with no commentary. It was not until long after the movie was already a smash hit in the cult community that Mike, Bill, and Kevin created a rifftrax for it. This is because the movie reaches a level of cinematic incompetence that really hasn't been seen before. Its acting is so awkward, its special effects are so poorly thought out, its camera work is so oblivious to the basics, and its script is so convoluted and nonsensicle that everybody, not just film buffs, but everybody can immediately see and hear how horribly, horribly made the film is. It is difficult to imagine how an hour and a half of incompetence can be funny, but it is one of the funniest movies ever made, even though the comedy is completely unintentionally.
Mike, Bill and Kevin (and their co-writing staff) are true geniuses of comedy and I love Rifftrax, but honestly they can't really keep up with Birdemic. They have tons of brillient material, but too often a particular gem of incompetence in the movie is drowned out or just missed while other jokes are being delivered in the rifftax. Sometimes it might have been a wiser decision for the guys to just let a few breif segments play out without commentary, since it really is a case of blink and you'll miss something hilariously bad.
That's why I say don't settle for one or the other; see both. But watch Birdemic first, without commentary, then see the Rifftrax version. It's what I still do; I watch the movie every two or three months, then follow up with the Rifftrax version a few days later. It's the best of both worlds. But please don't let the doubters hold you back, witness the original masterpiece of incompetence in its original form first.
Zero stars for filmaking Five stars for entertainment (which is really the important part) Four stars for Rifftrax (Four is still great!)
Pros so bad it's great, great rifftrax, gets funnier the more you see it
Cons rifftrax sometimes covers up a good part
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Rifftrax guys never fail

After the greatness that was the live Plan 9, I rushed to see this, and it was well worth it.
The guys picked out some of the most horrifying and bizzare short films from the 1950's and provided brilliant commentary.
The short film of the Rifftrax guys own making at the end of the presentation was also hilarious. I look forward to more original films by them.
After the two great live events so far, and the usual greatness provided online, I really can't imagine that anything the Rifftrax guys put on screen will be anything less than comedy gold.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Absolutely fantastic! The Mystery Science Theater guys come up with the best comedy I know of anywhere with their movie-mocking genius in Rifftrax. But the thrill of being in a theater filled with fellow fans, and knowing that it was all live, made it an unforgettable experience. Movies are always funnier when viewed in a crowded theater with other people to laugh along with you, and I don't know of anything that makes me laugh harder to begin with than Rifftrax.
Plan 9 was a great choice, but I'm up for more! Here's hoping they make a habit of having theater showings!
