If you enjoy the period pieces.... this one is for you! Superb acting by everyone. Beautiful costumes, Beautiful homes, beautiful story. Those Brits can REALLY make a good historical movie. more.. more more!!!
I didn't read the book but I will now. I was supposed to go out after the movie, but it left me so depressed that I raced home to see my kids. Acting was very good by the kids and Stanley Tucci. Marky Mark and the Mom... not so good. Susan Serandon, as usual, overacted.
It had minimal merit. Mostly corny. A few good scary-type scenes.. but totally unbelieveable. I mean... What first time mom goes into labor early, has the baby in 10 minutes and is walking around 10 minutes later. Stuff like that bugged me.
Bleak, bleak, scary, sad, tender. I'm a huge fan of the book, so I didn't expect much from Hollywood, but I actually enjoyed it. The post-apocalyptic scenery was great. the bleakness, real, and most of the characters believeable. A few flaws (I never say a movie is perfect) but a great story put on to film. I enjoy thought-provoking films and this is just that. See it. Then go home, eat a huge cheeseburger, shop for ammunition and water and soup in cans and hope you never need them.
What's to say??? Well, it's definitely the most unattractive cast in the history of Hollywood films. They went out of the way to pick some seriously goofy people. that aside... I saw where they were going and I appreciated the honesty and quirkiness that are typical of the Coen brothers. Not particularly 'funny' per se... but likeable just the same. I think it will be best appreciated by viewers of Jewish faith. Many laughs were underappreciated by people who are not familiar with the traditions and lives of the this particular religion. If you are familiar, you will understand the movie more and find it funny, I think.
I am a big fan of Donnie Darko and I did get the same feeling during this movie. Cameron Diaz was a better actress in this than anything else she's done, I'll say that for her. I actually enjoyed it. I enjoyed the creepiness and the story. If you like sci-fi and creepy.. you will appreciate it. It's not a horror movie.
If you go in thinking that you, as a viewer, are "supposed to be stupid " enough to believe it is real footage...then you will surely be disappointed. If you just enjoy it as a movie...it's ok. I think the acting was quite good, actually... If they had a bigger budget and used real film or high quality video and made it a regular movie it would have been great. The Blair Witch has been done already.
