Couples Retreat is no Wedding Crashers. Couples Retreat is a perfect example for a Vince Vaughn to choose his next project(s) very carefully. So far, since Wedding Crashers, he has been striking out big time. I know the money must be fantastic, however, he had better start to hire better writers. Couples Retreat was predictable, juvenile and boring, boring, boring. It's one of those "comedies" that you force yourself to laugh because that is why you came to the theater in the first place.
I found the film "Amelia" to be an extremely self-conscious depiction of Amelia Earhart's life. The title character, played by Hilary Swank, seemed to be constantly asking for permission to be herself. After initially getting over the dead-on physical similarity between the actress and Amelia Earhart, the film maligns itself by degenerating into a melodrama of the Svengali / Prof. Henry Higgins personage of George Putnam transforming Amelia Erhart into just another bar of soap to be merchandised. This consuming business relationship that eventually is consummated into the Putnam/Earhart marriage further degenerates into the extramarital exploits between Earhart and Eugene Vidal, Gore Vidal’s father.
Having always enjoyed war movies made from the late 40's - the late 60's (The Dirty Dozen, The Great Escape, Patton, The Bridge at Ramagen) this film fills a major void. While the films Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, for example, are very important cinematic creations, their realism and documentary feel, diminish their entertainment value in the final analysis. With this movie, you have a film that combines the great WWII genre movies of the past such as the examples I referenced above, with Quentin Tarantino's highly distinctive style, his brilliance for conceiving a story and executing it on film, and his unabashed love and knowledge of the history, power and craft of moviemaking.
