This remake was as close to the original as any I've seen! There is some revising to update it a little & some additional footage that clarified some of the original movie's plot lines.
Julianne Hough easily pulled off the illusion of her still being a high school student, as did all the actors. As sweet & pure as she seems to be in her real life, she was excellent in portraying the angst filled & rebelliously gritty teen. Some of her lines were a little shocking, but true to the movie. Actually I barely recognized her in the first few scenes.
The ending was definitely a stand up & cheer for the good guy underdog character. There were several very humorous scenes most involving Willard's learning to dance. Renn was clever & persuasive in all his conversations throughout the movie. I heard several "yea's" from other movie-goers & widespread clapping following his speech to the town council. Folks left the movie humming, singing and/or dancing. It left you with a very uplifting feeling making me wish I could still boogey.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie was hilarious from start to finish, and included some very heart warming surprises! I've read that it's not realistic, but come on,,,it's a cartoon!! I went with my grown daughter and 9 and 11 year old grandchildren. The theater was packed, and at the end of the movie, everyone stood to clap and cheer-then promptly sat down to enjoy the minions during the credits. Their rambunctious activities during the credits were side splitting!! I would recommend downloading the translation APP for the minions so you know what they are saying during their antics. What a HOOT!! This animated film equals "Up" & "WALL-E", which are the 2 greatest animated films I've seen.
I took my grand kids (aged 9 and 10) to see this movie and we gave it a standing ovation at the end. It was a very sweet story with a lesson that you should not ever judge anyone or anything by its appearance because that never gives you a glimpse of the heart or soul. We saw the IMAX 3D version, and that was pretty cool, too, although not as much beauty as we saw in Avatar. But, the scenes where Hiccup is riding the Dragon (Toothless) made you feel like you were actually ON the ride too! Great movie, great theme, great lesson!
