Depp manages to keep his metrosexual cool, plus his smoldering intensity, while playing an aggressive, commanding gangster. He plays him as intelligent and ruthlessly ambitious, rather than as cold blooded and brutal. Cotiliard is too light-weight and ordinarily pretty, to be interesting opposite him. I didnt believe her as a smoldering dark, Menomenie beauty. The role needed a different actress who could do the WI accent. Bale is a lot like his Batman character. The makeup, costumes, cars, soundtrack, and shots of the L create the mood of the old gangster movies well, and the political-economic context of Hoover, Congress, and the depression have a dejavu quality.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
