I wanted to give this movie only 4½ stars because I felt it wasn't as good as the first one Abrams directed. I felt this one was a little too heavy on action/adventure as opposed to story/character development.
That said, I thoroughly enjoyed it and want to see it again on dvd. But it didn't give me that "WOW!" feeling I got with the first one with the new cast.
Also, I do NOT recommend the IMAX 3D version of this movie. Maybe it's just me or where I was sitting (just behind center of room) but I felt the 3D was distracting.
Pros great actors

Could have been better, but good

First of all you should see this in 3D, the 3D added a lot to the visual joy of the movie. It is very good 3D, not like a lot of the movies coming out in 3D now.
As to the story it's a very good and interesting story but it bogs down a bit in the middle. This movie could have benefited from some judicious editing to speed it up in the middle.
Once you get through the slow middle it picks up again and has a very satisfying ending. The movie is really an homage to filmmaking itself and how the imagination of movies enriches our lives. I agree with this and would say this movie also enriches our lives - just that it could have been a little less slow.
All in all I do recommend it but I wish I could have given it 5 stars. It cost us $16 per ticket to see this in 3D and for that price a movie really should rate 5 stars, to justify the high price.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Great movie for Lennon fans!

Actually this is a good movie even if you didn't know or care about John Lennon. It's simply a good story. The fact that it's well acted, well directed, and has a great soundtrack of classic rock and roll songs makes it worth watching even if you aren't a Lennon or Beatles fan.
However if you love John Lennon as many of us do, I think you will find this to be among the best of the Beatles-genre movies. I rate it right up there with "Backbeat".
You should know, however, that this movie is not really about the Beatles. It does show the meeting of Paul, and George and the beginning of the Quarrymen, but these events are really incidental to the main story. The main story is John's relationship with his Aunt Mimi and Uncle Alf and of course his mother, Julia.
The movie focuses on just a year or two around the time he re-met his mother and then just past the time when she was killed in a car accident, which coincided with the time he formed the Quarrymen and eventually went to Hamburg with the Silver Beatles.
The movie is an emotional one about a dysfunctional, broken family.
I think any Lennon fan will at least like it, and most will like it a lot, as my wife and I did.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

My previous favorite movie - I'm talking BIG SCREEN movie experience, here, not great stuff like the Godfather, etc. which can be appreciated on small screens - was Lord of the Rings. As a fan of the books, I was thrilled what Jackson did with that story as he translated it to the big screen.
But this is a further step forward in terms of creating a fantastic world and making you feel it's real.
Also, the story is very good, the acting is good, and the direction and cinematography are Amazing!
Note: I saw it in IMAX 3D; I cannot speak for regular screen 3D.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
