While the sound, lighting and cinematography was exceptional in "Public Enemy" the character development of Dillinger left much to be desired. Was his motivation to rob banks simply to amass money; to show his cunning; for the sport of it; to become a "celebrity" ? Never had a sense from this production what his real motivation was. Johnny Depp's brooding, soulful look was not a look that I would expect to be portrayed from a machine-gun-toting bank robber.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
