I'm a huge fan of the books, and enjoy most of the Harry Potter movies; I found the first installment of Deathly Hallows a bit underwhelming. While some parts were appropriately and expectedly funny (Hermione's bag, Harry as Runcorn, and the Decoy Detonators) or sad (Hermione's parents, Hedwig, and Dobby), the remaining scenes were lacking.
I remember feeling complete excitement while reading the Deathly Hallows book (which I've read and enjoyed 6 times...once in the British-English version). The movie, however, dragged in places and left me wanting more.
I would assume that most people who are solely fans of the movies will be lost while watching this movie. The perfect example is when Harry and "Bathilda" are speaking in Parseltongue; readers of the book will know that Harry is asking if she has the sword, and Bathilda hints at its location. All the movie-fans will gather is that "Bathilda" told Harry to look at an old photo album.
If you are a fan of the books, you will likely understand the movie with no problems. While there are a few differences between the book and movie, this movie does stay fairly close to the book. I'm definitely going to see it again, and I hope my preconceived expectations of grandeur will be left at home this time so I may be able to better appreciate the film. Maybe I need to lower my expectations for Part 2.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
