I think this is Tarantino at his finest, serving up a plateful of frightful and troubling characters who make us laugh and shudder at the same time. He kneads history and bakes a delicious ending. The violence level is at "eleven" again. And he waltzes us through it all with an ambitious and beautiful soundtrack. Superb performances by all actors. Absolutely a must see.
I kinda missed ol' snake nose in this movie. But the film was very good just the same. The special effects are outstanding as usual and for this reason I'd recommend a theater viewing as opposed to DVD. There is an obvious rapport between the actors. They all seem to have grown into their respective characters well and the script does not seemed forced at all. Let's hope they can make the finale before the actors get sick of it.
Thumbs up: Costumes, Location shots, Marion Cotillard as Billie, Jason Clarke as Red, and the venerable Thompson machine gun which is loud, incredibly destructive, and will put a hole in you that you can throw a cat through.
Thumbs sideways: Depp and Bale. Both were adequate but seemed so subdued at times that you wonder if they left the theater before you did.
Thumbs down: Not Mann's best effort. Disjointed script. If I didn't already know the story, I'd have a hard time following this movie. Long winded at times: could have done without the J. Edgar scenes.
Synopsis: Eye-catching, but in the end needs better continuity and better editing. Wait for the DVD.
