This is the move we've been waiting for because the two previous Dark Knight movies have been so great. Well, I can honestly say this one tops them all! Tom Hardy's performance as Bane rivals Heath Ledger's near-perfect Joker as one of the best villains of all time. I don't know what the budget of this film was, but it must have been in the hundreds of millions. You've seen the football field implode in the trailers and that's just one of many, many special effects sequences that will blow your mind as you're watching. Just go and see this movie and you WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, awesome fx
This movie is based on Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" and is set in India amid that country's strict class and value system. Unfortunately, "Trishna's" storyline is too heavily weighted on the brutal sexual relationship between the rich master and his servant mistress. What's lacking in this movie is a constant reminder of how taboo their relationship is, and instead we get what is almost the story of a hostage and her taker develop from love to hate. The dialogue is remarkably flat for such rich source material and is one of the principle deficiencies in this film. I was left thinking "this could've been set in any other country and been equally bad." I can't recommend this film to anyone but the avid moviegoer and those studying/over curious about what a Hardy novel would look like if it were set in India.
Cons bad acting, too complex, slow, terrible adaptation of a classic novel
This movie is full of terrific young actors who capture their characters and deliver Oscar-caliber performances. This movie postulates that love is a dance and our next partner is waiting just around the corner. Is love random? And, does it strike when we least expect it? This movie tackles all of these questions and more with grace to deliver a real human drama with punches and twists in almost every scene. I especially liked the silly relationships that Michelle Williams has with her two lovers. She's in a love-zone throughout this movie and moves between lust and love as she tries to fill the gap in her married life. Love ultimately wins the dance contest, so-to-speak, and that choice is a painful one for her to make. I thought this movie was full of layers, with a very economical script and amazing acting. It was a great surprise to see these actors deliver such a poignant drama. I highly recommend it!
The half-brother and sister in this movie share one thing in life, a terrible father. This movie is about loss, both past and present, and how it shapes and ruins our lives. Both of the main characters in this movie are failing in life emotionally. One is a recovering alcoholic and an emotional wreck of a mother struggling to keep her rebellious kid out of jail; the other is on the run from the federal government after violating serious laws on the job. The meet after their father dies, neither one knowing the other existed. Ultimately, this movie is painful to watch and you may very well shed some tears, but there's serious acting going on here and you will admire the work being done. In fact, this movie is emotionally exhausting in many way and that's perhaps its biggest shortcoming. The writer could have simplified this storyline considerably and made a much more pleasant, and still poignant movie-going experience. Anyway, it's enjoyable enough to go see and I, for one, left with a greater admiration of the talent of these actors.
"True Blood" this is not. For the most part, this movie tries to create an alternate history for Lincoln as vampire hunter. It's not a very good movie and the action sequences are full of slow-motion with exaggerate physics. In other words, one blow from an ax can take down a tree. It's completely ridiculous and not worth the time or money to see. If you're curious, wait for it to come you by cable or Netflix instead of going out of your way to see.
Once again, Allen proves that he can write dialogue like few can. This is not one of his best movies. The storyline lacks focus and creativity, but just about every other aspect of this movie is very much the work of a master. The city of Rome, for example, is the muse for this story and Woody is clearly as inspired by it as he is with Manhattan. The traffic, the architecture, the history, the stereotypes, the leftist politics, the art and the artist, etc. He loves it and shows us every one of his favorite corners. The camerawork is mesmerizing. If anything, see this movie for Rome. Woody loves it and he goes all out to show it to us. However, if you go into it wanting more, you'll probably be disappointed. The actors just seem to be going through the motions of being in a Woody Allen movie rather than really being in one. You won't be too bored, however, since you can always just focus on Rome in the background and be thoroughly entertained.
The story is weak, it's basically about a small-town girl who goes to Hollywood to make it as a singer and she meet a boy and falls in love. It's important to mention that this movie is a musical with many, many song and dance numbers used to tell the story. Where this movie shines is the music! The soundtrack is full of great 80s rock songs from the likes of Journey and Def Leopard. It songs rock and the movie rocks whenever they're singing. It's the non-singing parts that are somewhat painful to watch.
This is a touching movie about friends, lovers, and sister who fill each other's lives with chaos only to turn it into fulfillment. Emily Blunt plays the sister who secretly loves a friend who's an emotional wreck. She offers him the family cabin for some R&R not knowing that her sister is shacked up there dealing with a tough breakup. As luck would have it, her friend and sister get it on and she's gets crushed. The rest of the movie is spent repairing the relationship with her friend and sister. This movie is well executed and the characters are nicely developed. It's an emotional time at the movies, but in a good way. I recommend it.
This is a very romantic movie about the length to which people who were once in love go through to recapture the moment. It's also about the power to believe and overwhelming doubt we all live our lives with. I found myself at the edge of my seat during this film because it's unpredictable and fresh in so many ways. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes sci-fi or romance.
This is yet another high-brow pseudo-intellectual rag starring Greta Gerwig. In this movie, she's 29 and in love with a guy who proposes to her and then breaks up with her because he "needs space." She's also in the middle of getting her Phd, which is just something she's doing and doesn't seem to take up as much time or effort as one would think. It does, however, need inspiration and she finds it only after her heart is broken and she goes through the usual grief involved after a breakup. The best thing about this movie is the dialogue. See it if you like strong modern women and hate to see them crumble.
