There isn't a single scene in this movie worth recommending. It's essentially your basic medieval black magic/Satanic rag with the church at the helm. You shouldn't spend any money, time, or mental energy on this film. See it at your own risk.
This is escapist material at its best. Kids get bored...and what if there were a world they could go to to have great adventures. Most importantly, it has to be a place where they're treated like adults and have not limits, physical or otherwise. The sequel delivers all those things and more. Remember, this is the 4th in the series and they all finish as if this is the last time around. I assure you it won't be as long as the formula is followed in the future--this one was on the money.
Bardem plays a small-time Barcelona criminal (Uxbal) with high moral values. He's raising two kids on his own because his ex is an alcoholic who "wakes up with a different man every morning." This movie has many, many subplots, including one involving a Chinese business man who imports workers for a sweat-shop; another friend of his sells drugs and black-market merchandise. This is not the ritzy Barcelona we tourists have visited. Instead, you get an underground and dangerous Barcelona that is home to many immigrants and people who have to go to tremendous lengths to survive. All is compounded by the fact that the main character, Uxbal, has late-stage cancer and only has a couple of months to live. It's not upbeat, so I cannot recommend it for all. Those who dare to see it will be rewarded with great acting, directing, and rich subject matter.
This movie does not contain much of a story, but it does present an amazingly complex slice of the character's lives. At the center, of course, is the much-talked-about performance of Lesley Manville's as an aging flirt who's hopelessly in love with the much younger son of a co-worker. Most of the movie takes place in an older couple's house, which seems to be the meeting place for all the people in their lives, including two brothers who are miserable and barely conscious, their young son, whom Manville's character lusts after, and the son's new girlfriend. This movie is full of moments that are so real you feel as if you were in the living room with them. The timing, their glances, and well-written conversations create the sort of tension that can usually only be experienced in real life. This movie is not for everyone. You must be a mature and discerning viewer to decipher the layers of drama that are being presented. I was captivated!
This is another very funny sequel full of double-meaning. Stiller and De Niro have great timing and play off each other really well. I laughed and the movie felt like a fresh new comedy, again!
There are plenty of moments in this new version of the John Wayne classic to enjoy. For example, Jeff Bridges is raw, unbound and, yes, very gritty. The newcomer, Hailee Steinfeld is also a terrific performer. Beyond those positives, you get a bunch of other half-baked performances that don't contribute much to the story. I can't recommend this movie because it doesn't hold your attention the entire time. There are scenes that lag, scenes that are tiring to watch, and scenes that don't make much sense. If you're a western fan or a fan of the original movie, you owe it to yourself to this this Coen brothers remake. Everyone else should wait for cable to determine if it's worth their time or not.
Kidman and Eckhart play their hearts out in this movie about coping with the death of a 4-year old son. This movie is heart-wrenching and will have you in agony as this young couple attempts to carry on with life amid the grief and memories that are all around them. What makes this story terrific is that they find comfort in the strangest places. I highly recommend this movie to anyone dealing with the loss of a loved one. It's true the pain never goes away, but the grief takes on different forms over time and, yes, the survivors must carry on living and finding comfort and joy wherever they can.
This is a great film on many levels! The story is rich with characters and terrific action; the actors are perfectly cast and deliver outstanding performances; and, the writing and directing put everything together with near-perfect execution. However, what stands out the most is Christian's Bale's performance as the self-centered, crack addict brother who once was famous. This isn't just a great boxing film, it's a great all-around drama that will win many awards, and justifiably so.
There's not much of a story in this film. Basically, it's about a digital world and it's creator...and that's it. The remaining story elements only serve to set up scenes where great special 3D FX happen. I can't recommend this movie because it's only entertaining at times and doesn't deliver an impression that will last.
This is a hidden gem of a movie about a neurotic individual who has the good fortune to be loved by a wonderful woman. He falls in love at first sight with her and pursues her relentlessly until she marries him. The storyline is complicated and has many intricacies, but is well-crafted and well worth seeing.
