Dirty Politics

This is a great movie about an up-and-coming political strategist who learns that to get ahead in this dirty game one needs to play dirty. Nothing is off the table -- it's eat or be eaten. Ryan Gosling goes toe-to-toe with heavyweights Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamati and comes our ahead. See it if you like politics, especially if you're a Democrat, and you'll get warmed up for the all the mud-slinging that's sure to come with next year's presidential election.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Great father/son movie!

Jackman plays a deadbeat father who gets stuck with a son he hasn't seen in a decade in this movie about futuristic robot fighting. This movie has it all! Great story, characters you'll easily care for, and a ton of action. I went to see it just for fun, but got blown away by the effects and the story.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Great movie!

This movie feels real! It's about a 27-year old who is diagnosed with spinal cancer and has to learn to cope. He's actually strong and dealing with it well; the same can't be said for those around him. The first thing he does is offer his girlfriend an out. His mother is a nervous and angry wreck; his dad is suffering from Alzheimer's and doesn't realize much; his friend, played by Seth Rogen, treats every opportunity as if it's his last one and tries to convince him that they should try to score with women every chance they get. All and all, this is a great movie with great actors and a solid script. The dialog was fun to listen to and well played by the cast. It's not a light movie and will make you think, and probably cry.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Intensely suspenseful

This movie is about a married man in his 30s who suddenly believes that he's suffering from the mental illness that struck his mother when he starts to have strong, paranoid feelings that a gigantic storm is coming. He begins to obsess over the storm shelter in his back yard and takes on debt to expand it. His paranoia is so strong that it begins to affect his dreams and performance at work and personality around those who love him. His wife and daughter believe that he's sick and try to support him, though the wife is over-demanding and often appears to not care about anyone but herself. So, for a very intenseful, well-acted, and suspenseful two hours, the big question for the audience will be: is a monster storm really coming? It's well-worth seeing to find out.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Drugs and safety

Chris Evans plays a drug addict lawyer who stumbles onto a beauty of a case against a medical supply monopoly that values profits over safety. One problem, he's a cocaine addict and party animal. This doesn't detract from his brilliance as a lawyer, however, but it does make him late for meetings and ultimately gets him killed (?). Unfortunately, this movie doesn't spend much time int he courtroom. Most of the litigation takes place at the opulent law offices of the firm representing the conglomerate.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

These guys can kill!

There are several sets of killers in this film. First, there's an elite group of hired guns who, for friendship or money, will kill just about anyone anyhow. Well, Jason Statham who is as close as this movie comes to a good guy, has to go on a killing spree to save his friend, played by De Niro, from a psychotic Sheikh in Oman. Still interested? Well, Clive Owen plays an ex-SAS soldier who is now part of a secret organization of ex-SAS soldiers who protect ex-SAS soldiers. Suffice it to say, they become interested in Statham's character's activities because his mission is to kill 3 ex-SAS soldiers who killed the Sheikh's sons. Then there's the real SAS, they're also interested in all this activity. Let the showdowns begin! These three groups are essentially battling themselves and they're all elite killers. To top it off, all this is based on a true story, or so the caption reads before the movie starts. Perhaps what's most difficult to believe, is that this movie feels repetitive and drawn out at times. It's not a bad movie, but I was expecting much more.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Math Ball

This movie is about reducing the game of baseball to a math problem. It's based on a true story and the Oakland Athletic's have been doing it successfully for years. This movie portrays, with some creative license, the way it all started. Brad Pitt does a solid job as Billy Beane and Jonah Hill is the numbers cruncher who motivates him. The movie lags a bit, and Philip Seymour Hoffman's character is the move unpleasant of all to watch. This movie succeeds as a baseball movie, but also as a movie about leadership and teamwork. It's a triumph and many levels and I highly recommend it.

"I'm yours for 5 minutes."

Gosling's character goes from passive nice guy to serial killer in this movie about cars, women, and money. By day, he's a mechanic with a side job as a stunt driver for Hollywood; he also received an offer to drive at NASCAR from a mobster. At night, he drives the getaway cars for criminals. This movie has all the makings of a lasting classic. It's well crafted to capture our attention and not let it go until the credits roll. I had a blast and I think anyone who likes car chases, heavy action, and good acting will get a kick out of it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The birds are doing that...

We've seen this movie before, but not this well done. This is the type of movie that usually pops up as a TV movie right after the SARS, or H1N1 (I prefer Swine Flu), or Bird Flu. There's always an opportunistic corporation willing to crank out a movie like this to prey on our fears. This movie is all of those things and maybe just a bit more. The first half of this film is great. The actors are spot-on and the directing is effective; however, the second half is less than that. In fact, there are dull moments and some of the lower reviews ont his site are accurate. But, if the subject matter interests you, you will find this movie compelling and scary. It certainly presents a plausible scenario for a virus than could potentially wipe out 1/4 of the worlds population in less than a year.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Best Action and Drama of 2011!

So far this year, "Warrior" stands as the best drama or action movie I've seen. There's a real story here about two brothers who were scarred by a drunken father--played to a tee by Nick Nolte. One of the brothers (played by Edgerton) is a physics teacher, has a family, is caught up in a financial mess as a result of the housing crash, and is in desperate need of money to save his family. The other brother (Tom Hardy's character) is wanted by the military for having deserted his squad and consequently causing the death of another soldier. Hardy's character is in it to give the money to the widow of the soldier whose death he caused. Amid all of this drama, the two brothers are underdogs in a mixed martial arts (MMA) contest in which the last man standing takes the entire $5,000,000 pot. Each fight is staged for maximum enjoyment. We see a David and Goliath-like match between Edgerton's character and a massive Russian fighter built like a tank; we see several fights with Hardy crushing his opponent instantly and executing the scene with a much-needed infusion of comic relief. I can honestly say that this movie has it all and deserves every rave review it gets. My hats off to the actors, director and writers for pulling off this complicated combo of drama and emotions. I really enjoyed the movie The Fighter last year, but this one tops that one in my book.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
