This is in my top two flicks for the summer (along with Start Trek). It has a very big heart, it is very clever, and is pure eye candy from the opening frames all the way through the credits.
This was a fun movie for a Saturday afternoon. Hanks' acting was solid, per usual. Rome serves as an awesome backdrop. However, I found the movie as a whole to be quite predictable and not very memorable. I didn't really feel like Langdon was in any direct danger. Unlike Star Trek, there is nothing about this movie that I will feel compelled to talk about around the water cooler at work. This is not as good as The Davinci Code, in my opinion. Enjoyable, but forgettable.
The new Trek is exciting. They manage to work in all of the stuff you'd expect from a Star Trek movie, all the signature sayings, etc. The special effects are amazing, but not overwhelming to where they overpower the actual story and the acting. All of the young actors are really refreshing. I can say that after a string of disappointing sequels and prequels (the new Star Wars movies, the last Indiana Jones movie, 007 that resembles Jason Bourne more than James Bond), this is the first "reboot"/sequel that did not utterly disappoint me. If you get a chance, see it on IMAX. The extra screen space makes you feel enveloped in the movie. What an awesome movie going experience. I actually want to go back to the IMAX to see it again!
