I had high hopes for this movie, given that it was based on an excellent animated show with a very good plot.
Although, I wasn't expecting the same quality, the move just doesn't live up to the original.
M. Night Shyamalan, just turned a great plot into a stupid one.
#1- He tried to turn the plot into a Bollywood movie. The actors were primarily Indian and the "Earth benders" were Mongolians.
#2- Katara is not supposed to be a wimpy girl, who can't water-bend and cries all the time for no reason. She is supposed to be a strong semi-independent girl and a very powerful "water bender", even from the beginning.
#3- The special effects were CHEAP and the "bending" technique were just plain stupid. A lot of movement just to get the bending started, just to have the effects out of sync and always late. Did anybody realize how lame that looked?? Then they used cheap dry ice "smoke" for air-bending ..... it looked stupid and weak. Even the fire bending (combination of real fire and CGI) look stupid. Particularly when Uncle extended his arms, created fire out of air .... just to do nothing with it.
#4- When Aang goes to the spirit world (which was the same lame shot every time), he is supposed to talk with his predecessors ... particularly Avatar Roku, not spend time with a talking dragon. Roku is a very important part of original plot and not having his character means that the plot will not develop correctly.
#5- The ending was LAME. So Aang creates a big wave and does nothing with it. The Fire nation is supposed to run with their tail between their legs just because of a big wave??? Then when they finally show Azula, she is a little Indian girl with pretty black puppy eyes and a very wimpy voice. Who the hell was casting for this movie???
So my advice is: WAIT FOR THE DVD AND RENT IT, if you still would like to see it. Otherwise, skip it and watch the original animated series.
The movie is good, but not ground braking as the hype claims. The story is .... well ... highly predictive, but entertaining.
The visuals of the are really nice .... but they are nothing more than digitalized versions of Earth's sea life added to normal ground backgrounds. He didn't create anything new as claimed. Just watch Planet Earth or Blue Planet if you want to see the real life originals.
Overall, the movie is definitely worth watching on the big screen, specially in IMAX 3D. Just don't expect anything ground braking. The attention to details (except for the ships ... they looked like made for a video game) was impressive .... but the CGI is nothing new ... just in HD.
