I went in with pretty average expectations even though I really like Bateman and Sudeikis. Colin Farrell was flipping brilliant and even Jamie Foxx didn't try to take up the whole frame when he was involved in a scene. Jennifer A wasn't a perfect fit for her role - it seemed to be a reach or just something to change up her usual parts that she plays... shock value. There are a few scenes that don't deliver, but I was pleasantly surprised at how good this movie was.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Good characters and story. This nostalgia piece hit me, as I am about the same generation as the kids in the movie. They aren't overly witty or too Hollywood cute. The movie doesn't over-nostalgia the time period, which is nice. 2/3s in, I was really into the film and loving it, but it just falls short at the end. It's good, it could have been great. JJ Abrams needs a new sound fx guy for his his monsters- this one sounds just like the smoke monster from LOST.
This movie was the first movie that we took our child to see in a theater. Although, some of the scenes were a little intense, she really enjoyed it. The characters were well thought out, as was the story (formulaic as it may be). It's a very well animated film that draws you in via 3d. A great time for everyone. I wouldn't really recommend this to children under 5 (our child is 3), but it's fun the whole family can enjoy much like Kung FU Panda (another Dreamworks film).
