Good Story..But

I really wanted this to be a good movie but it didn't happen. It's a good story but not well told and I expected much more than what I got from Melvin Van Peebles. The movie felt like a series of patchwork scenes that were stitched together without the benefit of continuity oversight and the dialogue seemed imposed on, rather than emanating from, the characters. A little more rehearsal time could have helped, but considering the writing, it probably wouldn't have helped that much. The Blues musicians were top quality, however they were just used as set pieces to only tell you where you were but were not made a presence in the film and I am a blues fan. I felt the actors were struggling to make their simplistic dialogue work and sadly what should have been the most emotional moment of the movie, in the pawn shop, was given short shift by deplorable writing and short sighted directing. I actually snickered at what should have been a wrenching revealing moment of discovery. There was a lack of tension throughout. I never for a moment thought Bailey would shoot Augie and I knew who was dead meat the moment the boyfriend shows up at the saloon. Morgan Simpson was just not right for the role and Michael Clark Duncan never got the direction needed to get beneath the surface. Kiele Sanchez had the most truthful moments but Luke Perry and Tom Skerritt were left swinging in the wind. Can't recommend it and I really wish I could. There were some bones there, but no meat.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Where is the humor

I can only imagine how many writers had a hand in this movie, but I can be pretty sure that there was no producer, at least one who had a clear vision or a sense of humor, which is just what this film lacked. Cowboys and Aliens, as just a title, has great potential for humor, but not this time. Native Americans and cowboys see Aliens and Space ships for the first time....... and no one is terribly surprised, "It's just another stranger come to town and we don't likem, so lets chasem outta town". It seems as if Harrison Ford's attempts to infuse humor into his humorless dialogue here and there is mostly ignored, most of all by the Director and you could feel the audience wanting a reason to laugh. Also, each scene seems to have been directed by a different director. I mean c'mon, Cowboys and Aliens screams for at least a little bit of Indiana Jones or Brendan Fraser Mummy humor. I didn't find truth anywhere in the film nor did I really care about any character. A good idea badly handled.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I liked the first S&TC but this movie tried too hard. The costume designer seemed angry and uninterested in the characters. The makeup was sadly lacking and the lighting non-existant. I didn't like any of the characters this time. This was a typical ego production. I have thirty years in the business as a stage manager and have hundreds of productions under my belt, so this is does not come from an uninformed mind.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
