I saw this movie yesterday afternoon, and I still feel too stunned to review it properly. Visually, the movie is just amazing. The creature effects are out of this world. I was in tears during one scene between Christopher Johnson and his son. Just heartbreaking. District 9 explores political themes without any sort of heavyhanded preachifying; although the most "evil" character does verge toward cartoonish near the end, most of the other characters are complexly drawn and at least somewhat easy to identify with.. And the South African backdrop is perfect. Just perfect. I plan to see this one again.
I am a huge fan of the original series, but I never considered myself a trekkie until yesterday. I actually choked up every time a character was introduced. The casting was superb, and the characterizations, even with the subtle differences made possible by the alternate timeline (itself an homage to the best scripts of the original series), were so dead on that it almost feels like I've found old home movies of beloved relatives who are no longer with us. As if that weren't enough, the plot is every bit as exciting and character-driven as Roddenberry's best work. The two hour movie flies by. And the special effects are amazing. I can't wait to see this again.
