Hate me all you want, but if you claim to be even just a casual fan of JOE, then I just don't see how you can rate this more than 3 stars. COBRA COMMANDER..BLEW..PERIOD. His character was AWFUL. His portrayal was so far off....I wouldn't even given it 2 stars if it wasn't for the accuracy of Snake-Eyes. He really was the only decent thing in this. Ripcord was way off...Scarlett never had a thing for Ripcord...Gung-Ho (supposedly) got played by that douche Brendan Fraser...watching the CGI'ed Destro after his transformation was [[painful]]...the vehicles looked like something out of a Chronicles of Riddick sci-fi...Destro was never a scrawny Scot.....How do you mess something up that is so simple? Just wait for DVD.
...because there are better things you could be doing this summer than spending almost 3 hours watching this 'supposed' summer blockbuster. Don't get me wrong, it has it's moments, it's exciting, and they really did do better this time around with the CGI. I actually enjoyed the first quite a bit more, but this one they really strayed. The twin-bots everyone seems to like, as where I thought they were completely uneeded. The only really decent dialogued scene was with Prime in the hangar trying to defend the Autobots right to be on earth. Bottom line is they really dumbed this one down...was it to relate to the audience? If so, then they lost quite a few fans.
I'm still stuck on the character of Sabretooth from the original X-Men flick. I really don't like where they went with his character at all. Schreiber is a cool actor and all, but I'm just not sold as him playing Sabretooth. I think they could have done better to add yet another character - Omega Red - from what I gather from the comics, he was at least a somewhat 'bigger' character for this story....add Yuriko, the chick from X2 with the awesome claws...where was she? Alot of hit + miss with this one. The characters I thought were cool weren't fed into it enough (like Deadpool), and the ones that weren't had too much cameo (like Zero- the 'Gun-guy'). OK action, but I think they're messing with this a bit too much.
I mean, how do you top the first two in this franchise? Seriously, Schwarzenegger is what made Terminator so popular to begin with...not trying to take anything away from Bale or Worthington, but even the combination of the two couldn't muster enough excitement out of me to enjoy it the same way. Acting wasn't superb, however the action was good enough. With the other 3 in this franchise, you also got the "impending doom of an utter end", with this, the end has already come...soooo...blaaahhhh...nothing more. Now everyone is just trying to survive. Big whoop. I don't know, it was OK, just doesn't knock your socks off.
...but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. My goodness, Zoe Saldana is friggin gorgeous. The scenes were played out wonderfully. The story line was easy to follow. The acting wasn't top notch, but it was fairly decent. It obviously had a youthful exuberence about it considering it was based on the beginnings of Star Trek.... there just really isn't a whole lot of really bad things to note about this movie. Oh, and did I mention that Zoe Saldana is friggin gorgeous? Cuz she is.......
....then you'll get the gist of this movie...just not so 'Stephen Kingy-ish'. Which is probably a good thing to most. There were some cool things to this flick, like the fact that Raimi did it....he brought back his 'Evil Dead' humor, but yet remained truly scary with this flick. Then there were some other things that I wasn't so cool with...he kind of jumped from one scene directly into another that didn't quite jive well, which in my opinion made it somewhat cookie-cutter-ish. It didn't take away from it too much however, the movie remained true to what it was supposed to accomplish, which was pretty much scare the heck out of you while also attempting to enjoy it. Job well done. 3 1/2 - 4 stars.
