I have read many reviews of this movie comparing it to Fern Gully. I watched Fern Gully when it came out with my--at the time--children. It was obviously about environmental activism.
• However, Epic is not Fern Gully nor is it about environmental activism. What takes place in this movie is the ages old war between that which creates Life in the woods and that which creates corruption, reducing the life of the woods into decay.
• Mixed in with that story are the lives of a father and daughter. Her mother, and she, believe he is kinda crazy because he believes he has discovered a world containing small beings. Now her mother is dead and she is trying to fulfill her mother's request that she return to her father. They suddenly find themselves drawn into the war between life and corruption as she is leaving him and the dog gets loose. While trying to find the dog she crosses into the magical realm and becomes the bearer of a bud containing the life of the woods.
• Oh, did I mention that she is also as big as a bug now? And must find a way to help the beings around her defeat the efforts of corruption. The artwork is fantastic and extremely realistic. The characters are rather, umm, interesting. I mean, can you imagine a slug with attitude? These folk brought us Ice Age and all the sequels that followed it. You just have to know that this movie is gonna be as whimsical and funny and all as Ice Age is.
• We're going back in a week or so to watch Epic again, just as we did with Ice Age. We'll probably do it in 3D the next time as well. Hope we see you there!
• BTW - we never bought the tape version of the movie Fern Gully. However, we WILL buy the DVD version of Epic when it comes out!!! This movie is worth owning a copy of.
Pros well paced, great story, fantastic artwork

This movie was one of the funniest movies we had watched in quite a while. It was fun watching Eep's father, Grug, struggle to keep his cool as his daughter, Eep, acted like any typically rebellious teen will. Then along comes Guy: cute, smart, and above all, single. And he thought he had problems before??? Add "the end" (as Guy tells it) to a sudden need to relocate and now he really has a headache.
As you might imagine, this will be a fast paced movie as our reluctant adventurers deal with the splitting of the continents, wildlife they are very unfamiliar with, the lack of sufficient lodgings, a budding teenage romance and a mother-in-law that just won't die. Did I mention that Eep thinks Guy is cute? and available? and he can make fire?
A final warning: this movie will leave you rolling on the floor and laughing out loud. You have been warned!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, outrageously funny
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Those of you reading the poor reviews given of this movie need to do what we did... go watch it yourselves!!! My wife and I have never seen or heard of the Last Airbender until the first movie trailers came out. Like many, we were curious and interested. Today we fianally got a chance to go watch it, and it was well worth our money.
What grabbed us were the manner Mr. Shyamalan managed to move from scene to scene so smoothly, culminating in the Avatar's... well, you'll have to just see the movie since we hate 'teasers' and won't provide one.
By the way, don't wait for the DVD or you'll always wish you had seen the special effects on the big screen. Impressive!!! Five stars from us.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

We Loved It

My wife and I watched the last showing for the day we went. I was nervous considering the "critics" reviews, but not too much so since many customers found it entertaining. And they were right. We found it an excellant mix of humor and drama to keep us watching, laughing, and at the end, crying. We liked the way the writers pulled the whole family into the movie. Seems to us the uncle just seems to always be where another mummy turns up (must be a close friend of Murphy).
All in all we recommend this movie and give it five stars.
