All the leads were great, especially Leslie Mann. Bateman was damn funny, as I expected, and Reynolds showed a real comic ability too. Yes, this is an R-RATED comedy (so the humor is frequently sexual or scatalogical -- don't be shocked!).
The premise is familiar of course, but it is full of enjoyable plot twists and very funny scenes. I kept expecting the movie to turn formulaic & sappy for the last 20 minutes, but it managed to steer clear of shmaltz, even to the happy ending. Looking for some real laughs? I'd recommend it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

All we wanted was 2 hours in an air-conditioned theater with something reasonably diverting. Nope. The special effects were nice, but I can not even say the characters were "interesting" or "dumb" because the dialogue was so short, choppy, and wooden, that it did not feel like there were characters at all! This would have been much better as a silent movie, with some subtitles to tell you the names of the battles. My 10-yr-old and his friend (both fans of the TV show) were the most disappointed. Pick something else for your summer afternoon!
No, I do not recommend this movie.

No this movie does not faithfully follow the book (which we loved), because that would have made for a 15 minute film.
We went for a night out, without hopes too high, but were pleasantly surprised. It was one of the best kids movies we've seen this year. Nice animation. Good characters. And no nastiness, or gratuitous villains. For film-loving parents, there were even a slew of sly references to classic movies over the years (e.g. Kubrick's 2001) that were fun, but not overdone.
Well worth the ticket, even with the surcharge for 3D glasses!
