Rom-com, yes. With a slightly different take, yes. Some have said that the movie starts slow & gets better. Agree, but it’s just the set-up, & doesn't take any longer than it needs. Some have said that the movie is predictable. The movie aims squarely at happy endings for all so there’s not much drama. People also do things that make sense from their perspective, so no surprises waiting to spring out. Now consider how odd that is. Indeed the movie's ending is very different from the rom-com formula of lovers somehow alienated who finally admit their love. There's no climax scene where one lover chases down the train or speaks over the public address system to a stadium of strangers. There’s a message in this movie & the love is natural.
First off ~ cast is perfect. Some of these characters are so well re-birthed that you will do double takes at certain facial gestures. Capt Kirk is amazing (as is young Spock, as is ...). The set designs and costumes also pay homage to the television show and early films. While everything is much updated, you can still see the thread of connection between it all. Early life character development is great. This adds depth to the current film, but also does a very nice job of setting up their universe for the franchise to keep making films with this cast. The action cool. The plot/premise is good. This review does not include my list of negatives because of length limits imposed. This will therefore probably be my last review.
