This movie could have been made for me. I cut my teeth on Marvel comics in the 1960s and loved the World War II Captain America reprints more than anyone in the world except possibly Stan Lee himself. So it's impossible for me to give a blank-slate objective review. All I can say is that this movie recaptures the spirit of Saturday matinee cliffhanger serials and Comics Code-era comic books better than any other I've seen. The hero is good-natured and appealing, the heroine dazzling, the cross-references to other comics (notably Sergeant Fury) thrilling to insiders. The retro musical number alone is worth the price of the show. In a long, hot summer in which good news is scarce and everybody seems to have the jitters, maybe we need a dose of Cap's idealism. It couldn't hurt.
