The movie theme and or message is a over used old one, with just a other world setting instead of perhaps the Amazon Rain Forest area or man first coming to America.
The special effects were all that got a 2 rating out of me, but the 3D experience was not worth the extra money and the effects obviously could have been well enjoyed in 2D. Compare this movie's 3D, for instance, with Alice in Wonderland and I think you can see my point.
I feel Cameron could have done a lot better for 500 million.
This was one of the better Star Trek Movies, but it suffered from poor acting by the "new" Kirk(my opinion) and a disjointed story line.
As a prequel it is certainly better that the Star Wars prequels, but I just simply feel Chris Pine did a terrible job as Kirk.
The special effects were great. Hopefully, if this series continues, Chris Pine will become a more believable Kirk (if that is possible)
One last comment, lets try and remember how Pike was originally confined to a wheel chair, from the original series. A series reboot that drifts from the original series itself, is a turn off
