First, I'll get the negative part out of the way. The Avengers at times leans much more on special effects than plot or character development, but that is to be expected for this type of movie. For example, I would have liked to have known more about Black Widow's "ledger" that was referred to a couple of times, I can't help but think that I should have read the comic book if I really wanted to know. Other characters, such as the Iron Man, Hulk, and Capt. America, displayed some hints of character depth. Most others, particularly the villain, were incredibly one dimensional, almost as flat as the aliens. Could have been developed much more thoroughly and I think this would have made the story more interesting.
Ok, now that the negative part is out of the way, overall this movie was alot of fun. It was action packed, pretty good pacing (although it dragged a little in the beginning), many funny parts that were cleverly written and excellently delivered, and some very epic battle scenes and good uses of the characters superpowers. Not to give anything away, but Iron Man goes through two suits, good thing he's a billionaire because he's gonna need a new one.
As far as age appropriateness, I took my 13 year old son and he absolutely loved it. I wouldn't recommend taking a younger child than that, there are some pretty intense parts/deaths that would scare younger children. The PG-13 is a perfect rating.
All-in-all, if you simply expect a fun time and a comic book type of movie, you'll love it. Don't be looking for in-depth storylines or complex characters. It's pretty much good guys vs. bad guys, an old story that has rarely been told in such a fun, and funny way.
3D is highly recommended - there are several sequences which you can tell were made to look better in 3D, and this really added to the visual experience.
Pros well paced, awesome effects, great use of 3d, many funny moments, great for 13 and over
Cons one dimensional characters, overly simplistic story
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Fun, but disappointing

My son is a huge fan of the books, and I read the first one - upon which this movie is "based". The term "based" is used very loosely - major portions of the book have been rewritten, scenes changed, major characters deleted - one of my favorites from the book, Aries, was nowhere to be seen. The plot is completely different from the book, and falls somewhat flat. The next "Harry Potter" this is not, in those movies they tried very hard to follow the book, but in this one it seems the writers changed it for no apparent reason. If you're a fan of the book, be ready for a shock. If you're not, I don't think this mediocre attempt will make you one. Sad, so much potential.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
