While I won't deny the wizardry on view in this technically stunning film, the story is a badly put-together hodgepodge of elements from other (mostly better) films. Dances With Wolves is the obvious touchstone, Cameron perpetuating the myth of the noble savage in this anti-technology, anti-human screeching polemic. You can also add The Matrix, Braveheart and Hayao Miyazaki's classic animation, Nausicaa in the Valley of Wind, which was much better at pitching an ecologically-sensitive message in an alien environment. And the purpose of ravaging this world is to get a material called "Unobtainium". Really? Unobtainium? That's the best they could come up with. I laughed like a drain. Where's my copy of 'Aliens'? Or, heck, even 'Titanic'.
