I first read The Hobbit 51 years ago, and have been rereading it, both silently and aloud, teaching it, writing about it and recently organized a Hobbitfest about it since then. I thoroughly enjoyed myself on opening night, although at times I started and said "What! How can they do it that way? But HE doesn't say that then..." etc. I imagine that much of the rest of the audience either hadn't read the book or had done so so many years before that they were surprised when, for example, Bilbo takes off the ring and appears among the astonished dwarves and so on. I think the movie was great for people who hadn't read the book; for those of us who have and have immersed ourselves in it, there are some things we must resolve ourselves to--I will see the movie at least a couple more times before 2013--because, after all, it is a MOVIE rather than a book. Recommended for all who love fantasy. The Stone Giants, the Misty Mountains Goblin King, and the sly small glimpse of Smaug are great. The dwarves are emo biker thugs. Peter Jackson's Bilbo is much less of a wimp than his Frodo was.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great scenery
Yes, I recommend this movie.
