I liked the movie overall, but it is not for everyone and it does have some flaws. The continual referances to credit default swaps, collateralized debt obligations, 'exposure', 'leverage' and other finance terms make some of the movie less than fully accessible for the average Joe. There is also a certain predictability built in with the movie's arc being built around the actual financial crisis of 2008-2009 and with the fact we all know Gordon Gekko has to be out to screw somebody. Having said all that, I think criticisms of the casting and performance of Shia LaBeouf are totally unfair. Just because he does not fit the stereotype of the amoral Wall Street trader does not make him unrealistic. The bigger you are in the business world, the more important it is that you act with integrity and remember that people matter. Which is really the moral of both Wall Street movies, isn't it?
This Trek movie requires no real familiarity with the older movies or series. The character development for Kirk and Spock is good, and the rest of the crew are cleverly introduced with a good serving of humor on the side. Special effects are are great, of course. Some of the plot devices are very far-fetched, such as the assignment of a raw cadet (guess who) to ship's first offcer, and then acting captain, and then actual captain. That is the equivalent of taking a new US Naval Academy graduate and giving him command of an aircraft carrier. - Never, ever going to happen. Otherwise, I enjoyed everything about the movie and will definitely see it again as soon as the DVD comes out. Highly recommend it. This new young cast was great!
