I grew up with a trekkie family, and I have been a fan of JJ Abrams as well. The Star Trek movie was great, especially in Imax. There were a couple cheesy moments in the movie, but all in all, it was great. The original Star Trek characters were well captured and reimagined (apart from one accent that didn't quite seem Russian to me). Watch for a cameo from Amanda Foreman from Felicity.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
