Bittersweet attempt

Great production design. Acting: solid and the action sequences were breathtaking. It was nice to see Trek finally done with the scope of a major motion picture, rather than a glorified episode. Downside: as a long time ST fan, all of the above could have been accomplished without swinging a wrecking ball through over four decades of continuity. Not worth the sacrifice for such a simplistic plot and a two dimensional villain. ST is a unique franchise with a rich history. Sadly, it required a more respectful touch. It would have been nice to see a new chapter in the existing continuity, while maintaining the film’s strong points. There really was no good reason for “re-imagining” ST, other than sheer laziness or contempt for the property.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
