I was rather disappointed with this film. While it was visually pleasing, it couldn't decide if it was a semi-comedic drama or semi-serious comedy and failed to deliver either.
This is the director's first major project (his second is a remake of 'The Black Hole' coming in 2012) and it shows: beyond the point about the comedy/drama confusion the movie doesn't have much character development (why is he a Jedi Master, why the daredevil pranks, etc...) nor does it get beyond the level of a half-assed rehashing of the original or equally poor execution of an escape story. Even the 3D was half-assed, it wasn't as obviously slapped on in the last second as 'Alice' but failed to reach the immersive quality of 'Avatar'. In the end the movie was blunt where it should have been subtle and subtle where it should have been bold.
If you are a fan of the original you have to see this movie but, skip the 3D and don't have your expectations too high. If your not a fan, spend your money on something else with more story, more effects and more focus.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Go see this movie, in 3D, on the largest screen possible. Ideally this will change everything about film, leading toward a more submerging experience
Having grown up watching most of the Trek franchises I'm glad to see one do so well. On the flip side I was kind of disappointed with some of the liberties taken but I understand that they wanted a clean slate
