What a feared the most didn't happen. They kept the same music, ambiance, and general user experience. It started off a little slow but picked up very fast. Most all the cast is back and the addition of Angelique I think will be good for the franchise.
But, this is my only caution. Most of the movie is filmed in darker locations (ships, nights, etc) and if you go to see the 3D version once you've put on the dark 3D glasses on top of it all it's almost impossible to make out detail. The good thing about the 3D implementation is that they did not over exaggerate the effect. They used it for depth. Only a couple times did things come at you and they were appropriate.
But, I felt that the glasses, the darkness caused me to miss the detail. I will be going back to see it again in normal 2D. This is a movie that IMHO would be just as good in 2D as in 3D. I'm still giving it 5 stars for the plot, storyline, etc. But consider the value of 3D. Some things just shouldn't be always made in 3D.
We went with friends (no kids) and were surprised as to the quality of the animation and the storyline. This movie was designed for Blu-Ray from day one. The message to children is unmistakable but it's completely entertaining for adults. One item we were completely taken with was one of the main characters is a Golden Retriever. We have goldens and I can tell you that they caught the personality of our favorite breed perfectly. We love Doug the Dog!
What they've done was create a completely new 'alternate reality' the allows the original crew have brand new adventures with new technology that would not have matched the original series. They are not bound the the 'rules and history' of the original Star Trek and can take this arc and run with it!
We've see it already shifting with the Uhura arc. I won't give any anything else, but people that have see the movie will know what I mean. This can develop into something that is now allowable in the 21st century and couldn't be shown in 60's TV.
We went with friends that were not original trekies and they even loved the movie. It's a great movie to watch especially if you like seeing Kirk get beat up a lot!
