This was a wonderful film that will amuse both the adults and the little ones. Steve Carell is fantastic as Gru and the supporting characters are strong as well. The story and visuals are fun throughout and it's definitely worth the extra couple dollars for the 3D version as it is used to great advantage. I laughed quite a bit and I think you will too. Fun for all!
As is the case with many sequels, this 4th movie in the franchise was fairly weak. There were occasional cute moments and wink-wink type stuff for the parents in the crowd, but overall, not a very creative storyline. There's nothing objectionable but they could have done better with the characters we've come to love.
I loved the first Iron Man and left this sequel equally satisifed. The story moves along and Robert Downey Jr is at his smarmy best as Tony. There is one final scene after the credits so be sure to stay for that. Great summer movie.
If you are a fan of Tim Burton's work then this movie will not disappoint. The usual odd characters fill Wonderland and Johnny Depp is in his Mad Hatter glory. I never read the Alice book so I can't say if it is true to the story but the story told on screen was engaging. Anne Hathaway was the low, low, low point for me (total miscast) but otherwise, reasonable length for the film, beautiful to look at and fun for families, though I would say it might be a little scary for those under 5.
If you're looking for a movie with special effects that you'll talk about for days, this is your movie. It's amazing what vision and technology can accomplish. The colors were vivid and the world of Pandora was breathtaking. However, the plot was nothing special. Basically man vs nature and/or other man, greed, self interest, etc. These themes have been played to death. That said, I'm not sure anyone will really care if the story is strong. They will be blinded by the spectacle.
This is the second Riff event I've been to and another very entertaining evening was had by all. The film clips and commercials were sometimes so dated and twisted in their own way that commentary wasn't necessary but as always, the guys added to the funny. The crowd was laughing from start to finish. Great show.
I enjoyed the chemistry between Rachel and Eric. The time travel storyline was ok but I felt like there were probably a few more layers of backstory and emotional development that were missing. I did not read the book so I assume it's the same old story of deciding what to include in the adaptation. The biggest issue I had was with the fact that he was naked when he travelled through time. It was not addressed as to why that happened. Thank God they didn't show the daughter the same way. If she has clothes, why doesn't he? The actors did the best they could with the material. I would rate this as rental quality.
I loved the documentary style of this movie. The symbolism is great (discrimination, prejudice, etc) and should cause some discussion. This movie shows the human vs alien conflict in a fresh way. The aliens actually have personalities (more so than many of the humans in the film) and what I liked most is that they can actually be killed relatively easily. It seems like in a lot of alien/creature movies, it's so hard to kill them or they need some sophisticated weapon. Nope, the fights are like regular fights (ok, "movie making regular" with tons of guns and explosions) where both humans and aliens die. The obvious set-up at the end for a sequel was weak but weighed against the rest of the movie, easy to overlook.
This was a terrific film. From the opening credits, I wanted to dive right in and see what the story was about. Zooey is terrific. She lights up the screen and she has a quality where, in real life, you would like to be her friend, or as in the case of Joseph's character, your girlfriend. Smart, realistic dialog and creative visuals make this a fantastic pick.
Funny people was an average film. As the trend seems to go lately, many of the funnier parts were in the previews. There are a few fun moments and nothing too depressing but overall, had an hour been cut (from the end mostly) it would have been way better. I would rate this as rental quality at best.
