It is so impossibly difficult to take something that has been so loved by so many people, reboot it, and come out on top. I think this movie has done it as close as possible. While the complaints of the timeline being brushed aside and Roddenberry's vision being destroyed may have some validity to them, I still think the movie was fantastic.
Special effects: phenomenal, though sometimes a bit much
Characters: Mostly spot on as possible (Scotty is the exception).
The movie was both serious and funny without one harming the other.
If you don't walk in with a serious mindset or preconceived ideas, you're going to love this movie, Trekkie or not. Amazing feat for writers, directors, and actors alike. Well done!
